Smoke was scen issuing from the roof of the First National bank about 10:30 last even- ing and the attention of the policeman on that beat was called to it. Instead of turning in an alarm from the corner of Main and Broad- y hose house to get a i man to go overand look at it and see if it was afire, An alirm was immediately “keyed in,” and the department responded. It was found that the smoke was issuing from a_de- fective chimney soot in the chimney was burning. No water was tu on, but the wrial ladder on the platform truck’ wus raised for the first time answering an alarm. The policeman who_gave the alurm said he had orders not to pull a box unless he was sure there was a fire, and for this reason he avanted a fireman to make an examination be- fore venturing to turn in an alarm. In this connection it 1 not be out of place to state that the instructions wiven the policemen how to turn in a fire alarm were rather queer. One of the patrolmen recently happened along when fan Bradley was repair- ing a box, and was instructed how to call the fire department. Suid he, “I'm mighty glad vou showed me how, or 1 would have made a big mistuke. The instructions we got was to turn the key in the door and then walk away, as it wouldw't do any good to try toget. the key out, for it would be locked in the door. ' They didw't say anything about pushing any button, and I didu't know there was such a thing. 1 supposed the turn- ing of the key sent in the alarm just the samo as it does when we turn inacall for the patrol wagon.” If this has been the understanding of the other members of the force it has been very fortunate that a fire did not break out on their beats. team heating, sanitary engi- Life building, Omalia; 202 Merriam block, Council Bluffs. — The Manhattan sporting headq'rs, 418 B- way. His ‘story is that the woman swindled him out of $100,000 in mine bonds, and when he demanded their return shot at him, and that she is now trying to blackmail him.' He added that he had been her dupe long enough, The woman denies the accusation and cluims that she was & partner of his in the mining business; that the money she re- tained was her share of the profits, and that Masterson attempted to shoot her, A week ago, she suid, he beat her black and blue and took #H00 and o gold watch from her. In the woman's possession were found loving letters from Masterson, in which he speaks of her as the woman_he has ever truly loved. No Question but That the Great Horse % Wind-Broken Ciicaco, May 12, <[Special Telogram to Tie Bee]-The Tinies' correspondent at ashville, Tenn., telographs: I have read the accounts of how the New York World had sent a veterinarfan down to Nashville expressly to examing and roport on the con- dition of thorough El Rio Rey; of how he made a and critical examination of the o, and how he found him sound and all right with the exception of some head trouble, catarrh perhaps, which can easily be cured. 1 believe, with the single exception of the superintendent, I am the most frequent visitor to the track here, and if any New York ‘“‘vet” has examined El Rio Rey in Nashyille he must have done so when Major was aslecp, when Joe Courtney was away and when 1 was holding down a ward nfeeting in the other end of the town, I am sure no one here will accuse me of being prejudiced against El Rio Rey. All know how reluctantly I have brought my pen to describe, him as he is, or, at least, as1_believe him'to be, Al know how I stuck to him through good and evil report until the facts came out and I became convinced of his true condition, and hence whate 1 say here concerning him 1 say with the keenest regret, not only from my admiration for the horse, but also from the respect and esteem in which I hold Mr, Winters, Major | and Mr. Courtne 1 know that they have all along been hopeful of the horse aud are still hopeful, but they must prepare to face the inevitable. If you know anybody in Chicago who thinks that El Rio Rey.will win the American derby and is willing to back his judgment, I can place his money for him at odds of $5,000 to £1,000. I am not a veterinarian, and neither is the man with the &,00 . i as the bookies say, ‘‘Come off, Rio Rey worked a mile here ye , and was given a good scray out. He whistled like a steam engine and you could hear him from any part of tho track. Is hearoarer! I don'tknow whether heis ornot. I um simply stating the facts. Houck, a blacksmith employed in the Union Pac railroad shops at Grand Island, accompanied by his son John, Jr., a young man of twenty ycars, made a hurried trip to this city last night. Yesterday, while the boy was passing along the street a mad dog met him, bit his thumb and passed on, to be shiot by the police a few minutes later, Houck had heard that Omaha was the home of & famous mad stone, which is the private property of Conductor Benbow of the street railway. After some inquiry the conductor and the mad stone were located at North Twentieth street, and there young Houck was taken for treatment, When seen last night both father and son were greatly agitated over the future results of the dog bite. but as the madstone was get- ting in its work by extracting the poison and turning a sickly green color, their hopes were taking a upward shoot. Both parties will remain in Omaha several days, that they may know whether the young man _goes mad, or” whether his life will be saved by the application of the famous stone. e Stole the Hotel Linen.
