A Hard Winter for Throat and Lung Diseasce, The past winter has been an unusually severe ono for throat and lung diseases. Coughs and colds seem ty hang on with great persistency and fail to yield to the usual remedies. This is more noticeable the further ecast you go. Many remedies that had enjoyed the popular favor for years past were pro- nounced of no account, and to have no more effect than that much water. Others previously little known in the locality jumped into popular favor and received unstinted praise. An in of this kind occurred at Alleghen Pa. Messvs, I, H. Eggers & n, o popular drug firm who have three stores there, say o lady after having bought her fifth bottle of " a_certain medicine said: *This one will be the last. I have cured up my own family and did them so much good that they, now want me %o cure our neighbors.” The medi- cine referred to was Chamberlain’s Cough Remedy. Messrs. Eggers & Son bought their first supply ‘last Novem- ber. They say at fust the sales were slow, but now their sales of this remedy exceed thatof any other two medi- cines they handle, and that the greater part of their sales ace from merit alone or through the recommendations of others. One retail druggist in Pitts- burg, Pa., has ordered five gross of this remedy for his individual retail trade during the past four months. This remedy is well known heve and sold by nearly every druggist in the city. Announcements. A dispateh from Chicago says that the Union Pacific has cast an additional fire- brand into the white-heat of western rate troubles. Itseems that this compsny con- cluded not to be drawn into the war on any basis, and thereforo gave its eastern connec- tions notice that under no circumstances would it nccopt ~a less percentage of the division on through business than before the reduction of the Chicago-Missouri river rates from i5 10 60 conts first-class. This caused n pro- found sensation, The Iowa lines naturally nkjected to paying any more than formerly, consequently serious trouble is threatened. ‘The managers over thero held a meeting yesterday and discussed the situation, Every Chicago road and some the trans- Missourl lines were reprosented. ‘Ihey had ahot time, The Union Pacific clearly in- formed them that it did not propose to lose money through a fight in which it took no part, nor did_it want any reduction of rates west of the Missouri river, “Wh should we ba forcad to accept a less r cent,” said ap official of the road yes- rday, “simply bocause somebody clse sces fit to reduce rates as ¢ means of re- venge for some coutroversy that cannot be adjusted, It1s nonsense. [ beiieve it is a good thing for the Union Pacific to be AgEressIv : *But your contemporuries find occasion in the present difficalty to, make cavital out of the fact that the Northwestern has voted agnust the Union Pacific's position. If they can find any cousolation in the Northwest- orn’s action, I am perfectly willing they shali have it. However, don't get alarmed over anything until In the maan- time just keop an eye on the Union Paciflc and see whother or not it sustains the posi- tion it has taken in this matter.” Buitding in Nebraska, Unless the present state of affairs change at least one road, and that is the Burliugton, proposes to dofer all oxpenditure of money in building in Nebraska this year, except on the Omaha union depot. President Perking has written to General Manager Holdrege informing him that while rates are so dis- turbed and demoralized they ,cannot think of incurring additional expense. These things, however, will bave no effect on other corporations and the year promises to be an active one. Between the Union Pa- Missouri Pacific and_Rock Island con- siderable new work is to be performed. A local company organized at Kearney in which ion Pacific 15 interested will build the Wood River branch. The Rock lsland bas decided to construct the cut off from here to either Beatrice or Fairbury which will con- nect the main and Denver lines and it is confidentinily understood that Mr. Gould’s company intends to take up the Omaha-Yankton schome, General Manager Clark is expected in Omaha some time next wenk, the object of his visit presumably veing to discuss thav proposition. Trying to End the War. A strong effort is being made to terminate the passenger rate war. General agents of all the western lines have received notice tp attend a reeting in Chi- cago next week. Some of the lines have been discovered manipulatiog rates to such an extent by the payment of commissions tnat the revenue has been reduced to less than the cost of printing tickets. For in- stance, the Rock Island is accused of selling res from Denver to Chicago at $10 first class and §14 second class, with a §4 commis- sion to brokers. Of course, it denies this charge, but Union Pacific men say they have bought n ticket at $16 and can prove what they say. A New Traveling Agent. Mr. J.
