H. D. GALLAGI S, Todlan agont. wora s tory framo and brick S R RS B0 WASHING THE STREETS. The Era of Clean Thoroughfares Said to Have Arrived, The Hercules streot-cleaning machine has been introduced into London. It is the invention of A. Hentschel, of Ber- lin, and is suid to be capable of ov coming 21l the defects of existing app ances, The Hercules machine, which is pulled by a couple of horses and worked by the driver, consists of a cir- cular tank holding about 800 gullons of water, monnted on three wheels, with a pipe which supplies a sp inkling tubo in front similar to the sprinkler on the ordinary water-cart so familiar on the streets during summer weather Under the tank in the rear isan lo- din-rubber screw-snaped revolving roller, which rotates on the ground in an opposite direction to that of the wheels, and by means of the water pour- ing from the sprinkler in front the roiler vractically washes the streot clean, instead of ‘spreading the mud out 1n thin layers, as in case with the cicca- lar brush and the squeegees. The Hercules is suid to be very useful in the removal of snow. In this cas solution of sult is added to the water in the tank. This melts snow, and ena- bles it to be swept toward the gutter of the street, but of course the fall of snow must be taken early to be effectively 1t with.
