THE OMAHA DAILY BEE: TESDAY, MARCH 11. 1800 THE SPECULATIVE MARK'TS. | The Decrease in the Visible Supply of Wheat Exceeds Estimates. A FIARMER FEELING IN CORN, May Onts Moderately Active—Oniy a Fair Trade Revorted in Provis- lons—An Advance in Cats tie and Hogs. CRICAGO PRODUCE MARKETS. Cmicaao, March 10, —| Special Telegram to Tins DBer|-The wheat market was nar- row during the forsncon. Che opening was i, better than the close Saturday at 79%c for May. Thers was adip of 8 fraction o stiortly after the opening and an hour e price worked up W 7A@ ie, the best price of the morning on the visible sup- ply figures which at one time promised a de- crease of over 100,000 bushels for the west. The fnai figures made % aecrease of 552,000 busheis. This was considerable more than the popular estimate and was a bull force as far as it went. The principal decreases were 207,000 bushels at Buffalo, $5,000 at Minieapolis, about 4000 at New Yore in store aad afloat and 46,000 at Phiiadelpnia icago the stock in atore decreased 105,000 busheis and afloat increasea »0 bushels. Aside from the visible supp: ires thera was litde outside influence. ation of government crop figures of some sort after trading hours toduy caused muchwaiting. When price of May touched T840, there buying orders to help the marketand no se: ing pressure. At TSiga there were seil orders and less buying. Later in the da buying of 30,000 bushels oy E. W. Bailey & Co. attracted some attention. It was credited 0 Hutchioson. [t was very near 10 o'clock when the market took on new life on fresh buying and the price of May passed the high point of the morning and went irom Y w 4¢in a few moments. Thers was a rumor that Dodge will make the wheat in farmers hanas less thao a vear ago. Minne- agoiis wired that stocks in country elevators bad decreased 275,000 bushels for the week. ‘I he marset was at the best point of the day at 10 o'ciock, with Biosseau, Driver aad othiers the Dest buyers. Thers was quite a whirl in wheat the last half hour. There was one rumor afloat that Dodge will make the amount of wheat in farmers’ haods only 120,000,000 busteis. Only the sensational traders took action on this. There was some good all around buyers and the price of May went 10 TM@T0isc, and closed at i @idc. March was at 7S¢ nominal. June soid for the day at 78%;c and TWige, closing at e, July soid at 705%c and closed at 7640, A fair amount of speculative business was reyorted in corn durmg the first haif of the session and the feeling prevailing was quite firm, as the advanced vaiues ruled quiet, buv the early advance was very well maintained. The strength of the situation was due to a great extent to some cold and wet weatner both here and in the west. Offerings were lignt while good demand existed from shorts. July in particular being in Zood request. The local receipts largely exceeded expecta- tions, but did Dot appear to cut mucz of a figure. though 190 cars wers contracted. First sales woere a snade above the closing prices of Saturday, were Hrm and gradually advauced j@%e, ruled very sterdy and closed iy@% higher than Saturday. ‘ash property was in liberal supply with the demand fair and prices @« higher and closed firmer. Uther futures were quiet and firmer but without new f tures. Car lots of Na. 2 in store wers dull at 30}, ci@30%e for reguiar and at e for a spe- cial house. No. 3 wnite for May was slow with 2% @221gc hid Only a fair trade was reported in the market for hog products. but the feeling was decidedly stronger, particulariy for im- mediate slupment and near future deliveries. The receipts of products were moderate ana shipments well maintained, though a larger proportion were for th uboard and foreign markets. Offerings on specuiative a.count were only fair, sellers being rather cautious in their operations under the surrounding circumstances. Local operators were a li tle more inclined 10 purchase for invest- ments atd shorts provided for but few out- standing coutracts. Outside orders were oaly fair and favored the duying side of the market. Prading was chiefly in May, June and July contracts. Offerings of near deiiv- eries wore verr small. Prices ruled higher on lesding articies and the extreme tgures were fwirly supported \n most cases, CHICAGO LIVE STOCK.
