A Once Famous Winner of Fortunne Who is Dying Poor, “Daddy” Roagan lies dying on a cot in the Lnsworth hospital, says a St .Imu‘yh digpateh to the New York World. Daddy. as he has been known for the past twenty yours, was at one time one of the most famous and daring of Mississippi and RRod river gamblers. He was born in Russellville, Ky., six; two years ago, and at an early age blos somed out as a sport. The story of his adventures would fill a book, and the sum total of his winnings is in the millions. In 1858 Daddy won from a Knoxville planter named Ross the sum of $I18,000 in an hour’s play. At another time during a trip on the Creole Belle a blackleg named Edgeton was caught ina dishonest act by Rea- gan, who shot a fifth ace from his hand and then K\\L a bullet through each of the ‘‘crooked” sport’s ears. Kdgeton, maddened with pain, shot Reagan in the head, but, the bullet glanced off. At St. Louis, in 1869, Daddy sat in the highest game of his life, and left the table a winner of over thirty-five thous- and dollars in cash and checks, and about fourteen thousand dollars in promissory notes. In 1872 he was re- puted to be worth $100.000, but bad lu claimed him, and he steadily lost his fortune. roday he is without enough monoy to buy a burial casket. Daddy was called a “‘square sport,” and gave away over half of what he won. Heis said to have sprung from one of the best Kentucky familie i op e o Notwithstanding the very tiresome utiliza tion of its name, *‘Eiffel Tower" colors and designs in vrimming remain in fasiionable favor, - A Busy Preacher. If there be any busier man in New York than Rev. Morgan Dix of Trinity corporation he would do well to step up and be identified, says a New York let- ter to Richmond Dispatch. Besides attending to the vast routine business of the Trinity corporation, with its $20,000,000 invested, preaching regu- larly, marrping people, visiting the sick and officiating over the dead, he is cailed upon by men and women of every walk in life for advice on all sorts of questions. No matter how early you 2o to his oflice in the morning you will find a dozen or twenty people ahoad of you. They all want to see the disiin- guished rector -of old Trinity in per son and explain to him their various schemes and troubles. The writer of this waited two hours in his office the the other day for an opportunity to get a word with him on a matter of private business. In personal appearance Dr. Dix is one of the most striking men in New York and he always attracts a great deal of attention. He is a strong preacher, a deep thinker, and his voice pas lost none of the charm that made him famous as a_preacher. While not exactly the fashionable preachor, he is called” upon by society to officinte at weddings that are unusually profitable. His personal income is envcrmous, and he has a comfortable fortune.
