J. Potter, Who has been the host of that hostelry for the past three years, is preparing to vacate it. Assoon as the present maze of prelimi- naries regarding the appoaisemont of the block for postofice purposes is gono through with, the old building " will be razed to the ground. In its early days the hotel was the only first-class inn of which Omaha could boast, and though of late it has been surpassed in style by its younger sisters, it has been one of the best paying hostelries in the eity. Tha original bullding was erected in 1865 or 1 10 consisted of two stories and & garret. This stffucturo is still standing al though obscured by tha two three-story ad- ditions erected in front of it. The old build- ing was first ocoupiod by Josiah Morrison, who conducted what would in these times be known s a boarding house, but in those primitize days it bore the proud name of the “Omaha house” and wag considered a first ciass howl. Its rates were 83 per day. Among Mr. Morrison's first guests was the theatrical troupe usder the management of Mr. Corri. Jean Clara Walters was the leading lady of this troupe and many of the old settlers who were smitten with her chiarms still remember her. A few ynars later the three.story addition which now constitutes the west portion of the hotel was built and afterwara the por tion on Sixteenth and Dodge was erocted. Mr. Seth Cole succeaded Mr. Morrison as landlord and run the the hotel for four years, Mr. Page next rented the building from the Folsoms, but conducted the hotel only for a fow months, when he died, Mrs. Page, his' widow, sold out to C. It is a fact, es- tablished by the testimony of thousands of people, that Hood’s aparilla does cure scrofula, salt rheum, and other dis- ses or affections ariring from impure state or low condition of the blood. It also overcomes that tired feling, cre- ates a good appetite and give strength to every part of the systom y it. COMPLIMENTS TO EVANS, The Council Bluffs M Up by an Omahan, are notas cal and poaceful with nate Dressed a8 a summor night's dream. At the last meeting of the directors some things occurrad which caused considerable bad blood and impelled one or two wembers to leave the Omaha National bank boiling over with rage, Ao effort made to kep the disagree- ment seeret, but throupgh John T, Evans of Council Bluffs, it nas leaked out and as- sumed the shape of rathor serious charggs againgt some of the Omaha people, one of which is that a dividend has never been de- clared. Mr. E “is u ns is quoted as saying that thers sh balance of £100,000 on hand, but by reason of its interest valuc to the bank, which b fixes u quite u figure, certain directors are using it for their own pecuniary benetit, and could not be expected to b favor of declaring a dividend.” ‘This, however, was not, it 13 learned, the real boue of contention. All the directors except Guy Bartou and one other were in favor of deciaring a dividend, but subse- quently decided that considerable money would bave to be expended in fixing their track east of the briage approach so that it might not be dumaged by higi water, and concluded thot whatever surplus thoy had should be ikept for thut purpose. “‘We have mude some money,” suid a membaer of the company, “*but ithas been in- vested right along in improvements on the the property., Mr, Kvans' statement that ‘we have $100.000 of u balance on band is ub- surd. I%is true we bave a cash fund in the treasury gotten from the sale of bonds, but no such an amouat as that. I'he truth is that Mr. Evans has ulways been @ disturbiug element. He has repeat- edly charged atl of us with nearly every crime on the calendar, such as ‘thicves, con- spirators and swindlers.” His present griev- ance arises ouv of the re-eleetion of Stuart us president, and what he says with refer- ence to the surplus, nterest and refusal to re a dividend is unfounded. Anyway,” continued the speaker, ‘'the whole thiug is a strictly private matter, and I object to airing it in the newspapers. = Let Mr. Evans talk if he wants to. We all know him and are accustomed to his complaints,” Dr. Birnay, practice limited to ca- tarrhal diseases of nose and throat. Rooms 248 to 250, Bee building, DANGER OF DARKNESS, If Electricity Shoutd Fail We Would be Three Days in Darkncss. It is expected that on March 15 the Thowpson-Houston electric light company will be able, under ‘their contract with the city, to light the main portion of town by electricity. This lighting was to have been accomplished on the 14th inst, but it i claimed it was rendered impossible by de- lays sustained by the company. The district to be thus lighted is rather an irregular one, extending in somo places as far south as Center, as far north as Buraette, and as far west as ‘S'wenty-ninth avenue. *Suppose tha electric machinery should gev outof order, the wires be cut, or becuuse of atmospheric disturbances it should be im- possible 1o light that diswrict by electricity what bave the city authorities doneto prevent the town from remaining iu_darkness,” was asked by & eitizen, Frank Murphy, president of the gas com- pany, was questioned on the subject. “The city has made no arrangement with the gas company to supolygas in the event of the electric light being shut off, and we do not intend to keep one street lamp in readiness for an emergency. 'The supply of gas, of course, will not be shutoff because the lamps are connected with our mains, We will, how- ever, put @ top cap upon every burner, which will both prevent the gas from escap- ing and children and others from lighting the gas at random. *How long would it take in the event of a serious accident to the electrio light plant, to romove those caps and thus save the city from darkness{” 1 thinik 1t would require about three days, There are, I believe, nearly three hundred lamps in the district which 1s now to be lighted by electricity.” — Flits, spasms, St. Vitus dance, nervousness and hysteria are soon cured by Dr. Miles' Nervine.
