Ho Msakes Coffing and Graves Wife and Five Ohildren. In the mining district of Upper Licore there was recently developed a story of v, solf dovotion and donial seldom equalied in fietion outside of Bulzac, says an Ottawa special to the New York ‘World. Of a father and mother and five children, only one remains. The died from diphtheri; The sul vivor is the father, and from his pre: ent pitiable condition it is charitable to slieve that he would be better off with his lost ones. The disease first came in a mild form, but soon increased in ma- lignity. The two youngest children soon s cumbed to the aflliction. The Sorrow and gloom that came into that humble home was not lightened by neighborly sympathy and consolation. Sympathy there might have been, but the fear born with it proved the stronger, and the neighbors avoided the stricken house. Those who lived there were shunned like pest patients, and though there were kindly hearts in the rough workers thereabouts, the sense of per- sonal risk and danger to their own fam- ilies halted the ministration of many a helping hand. The family was ioo poor to secure a doctor, and this fact made s easy road for the disense. It was a sad funeral of the two little ones.© The fatherhimself made the cof- fins, and with his own hands dug the last rosting place. Mother and father were alone in their sorrow, alone with their dead. Then they returued to their home again—into the grim shu- dow that hung over the bed of the three other sufferers. The days and nights were the same in their poverty aud af- fliction, but the parents watched un- consingly over them. Finally the flume of one of the young lives, after flicker- ing fitfully through the night, wag extinguislied as the cheerless gray of early morning stole into the room. Another coftin rudely made by the thin trembling hands of ‘the grief-stricken, but tearless father. ‘A third little grave on the bleak hillside. Three, at least, emuncipate from poverty and pain. And 80 time_went on, weary days full of anguish and waiting—for what? The fourth child died. It was buried in the same fashion as the others and the exiles in affliction turned their care to the remaining child. 1t would be spared them for it ap= peared to rally, There was a glimmer of promise in the desolate skics. Fate was not so cruel after all. Though weak from want of proper nourishment and nearly prostrated through the se- vere strain of watching over what they loved best, the father and mother toolk heart. ‘The child would ive. This was cheer even swoeter than the sympathy and assistance denied them, The child would live. But the last forlorn hope was never realized, The deceptive rally of the little one only ‘)ruccdml a sovere spell, which left the ouse childless. Five little graves side by side, five mourned little ones, a deso- late home and a heart-broken mother. The good woman worn out by her lon and fearful nursing and watching, tool to bed herself. She never rose again, She died in a very short time, The husband made another coffin and, with his faltering strength, carried it o the hillside. The mother was again with her children, They were beyond want und the vavages of disease, They had followed each other within two weeks, 1t is feared that the reason of the man bas fled. Hoggard, emacinied and wild- oyed, ho wus discovered wandering in the road muttering to himself: “They are all on the hilll There on the hill— all, all!” tor T Mr. R. L.
