Directed Against Sunday Papers by tho First U. P. Pastor. WORSE THAN THE SALOON. inisterial Artists oint Out Deep Damnation of the Tak of the Seventh Day Nows« papors. the 3 Sunday Papers, It was a smaller coterio of clergymen than usual that mot in the Young Men's Christinn association hall yesterday morning at the tnird meeting of the ministerial union to pass Judgment on tho wicked Sunday nowspaper. In the ubsence of Rev. Dr. Lamar, Rev. 4. I\ Detweiler was choson chairman, Rev. Mr., Fronch, of the United Proaby- terian church, was announced as the speaker of the day, and his subjoct as being *“The Sunday Newspaper,” Mr. French opened his address with a complimont to the newspaper men of tho city snd couutry who were so diligent in gathering up every item of interest to tho peonle; also for thivir fuirness 1o comment, the wisdom with which they discussed publio affairs and the deference with which they treated Christians and religion. “One fo slow,” said the speaker, *'to incur an antago- nistio rolation with them. Thor influence is scarcely less thau that of the pulpit on jus- tice aud humanit, What | have to say is not in antagonism but iu friondly criticism, There are many ways in which the papers might be brightened and strengthened and it is our privilego to point theso out. “In this Sunday newspaper business, there is but one of two things to do, either to convert the present Sunday editions into religious papers or suppress thom entirely. 1 favor the latter course. We do not oppose the pupers from u political stundpoint, but, us pastors and adyisers of our congregations and from that standpoint we speak almost with authority. Ho who reads the Sunday paper reads very hittle that is suitablo for Sunday meditation: the records of crimes and of Aporticg news aro as bad s the Suudny the- atre or prize fighits. The society and theat- rical news is inconsistent with roligion, “The man who advertises in the Sunday paper is ns guilty as though he opened his store on that day. A Christian merchant who advertises hLis wares in the Sunday paper is worse than the editor of the paper as the latter does not claim to bo a Christian and is consistent in his actions. “Iam opposed both to Sabbauh toil and Sab- batt traflic. The reporters and otber nows- paper men ought to have a duy of rest, I dou’t care when thoy get a day of rest us long as they got one day in seven. It 18 & fact that considerable of the work on the Suuday newspaper is done on Sab- buth morning in spite of our Sunday laws, and be who receives and reads the papor is particeps criminis, Thereis a moral harm in the perusal of the Sunday newspaper. Iuv turns the thought into secular channels and hus & tendency to lower the sauctity of the day. . A great many of the subscribers to u Sunday paper are irreligious, but 1t must be a source of ustonisment to_newspaper mon that 8o many Christians take it. 1t is an ov- 1dence of the decline of the church. “The Sunday newspaper and saloon are relatives. The subtle influence of the Sun- day paper 18 worse than the saloon. Only a few young men become drunkards from the saloons, but there are myriads of young men and young women whose only sermon is found in the Sporting columus of the Sunday paper. Spiritually, they become paralyzed by such reading. It is our impegative duty to deny the Sunaay paper entrance into our howes, Wo should speuk out clear on this subject. Wo should :lol play the dumb dog while souls are being 0st, “I wo can receive the Sunday paper with- out the weekly edition, why can’t we re- ceive the weekly edition without the Sunday papert I the Sunday paper is thrust upon us, it soon eains the wmustery. At first when we receive it wo place it on the shelf for pe- rusal on Monday. Next we-take it down to 800 the church notices. Soon we gef to road the other portions of it and almost before we kunow it wo look forward eagerly to its com- ing on Sunday morning, and it is more missed than any other edition of the week. “Sin is a monster of such hideous mion, Thav to be hated needs but to be seen. But seen too oft—familar with his face, ‘We first endure, then pity, then embrace,' At the suggestion of Rev, Mr. Thain the various ministers present were invited to express their opinions of the Sunday papers. Rev. Mr. Holt was the first called, and ho said that, after a person had read a news- paper oun Sunday worning a minister couldn’t pound a sermon into his head with a sledge hammer. All sermons were then vaip, Bun- day school scholars und teachers that had read the papers didn't go with a zest w the house of (God. How little it took to cause them to turn from God! If the gospel hadn’t attraction enough they had betier stop preachiug it. Rev. Mr. Henderson thought that it was possible for one to do too much reading of even religious matter and induce mental dys- pepais. We need more meditation, more thought, If the Sunday paper was travs- muted into a religious journal there would be a likelihood of too much reading. The publishers of the papers should respect the ininisters’ rights and abate the Sunday edi tion—the Sunday curse, Mr, Crane said that he bad ordered his Sunday paper stopped, but Sun- duy one wus thrown into bis. yard and he immediately thrust it into the stove. The publishers had no idea how much the Sun- day paper degraded the morals, Uf they bad any regard for morals or chi anity they Wwould cease to publish the b‘uuduly paver. RRev. Mr, Dawson suid that he always com- mitted the Sunday edition to the flames, Rev. Mr. Schnaible dropped & bombshell by remarking that “I prefee reasaing the Sunduy papers to couning the books from the public library to which the children have ace I the' pustors fight the Sunday upers they will cause their church mem- ers to become hypocrites, s they wi smuggle the Sunday papers into their home aud read them anyway. It is 1o 8in us fur a8 1 can understand it to read a Sunday paper.” 1ev. Willard Scott said: “If this looality don't suit you, my dear ministeral brethren, why don’t you go elsewhere! It suits me all right, and I am willing to stay here, 1 he ministry 1s_undoubtedly highly honored in this city. I think the Sunday newspaper better than anv other edition of the weei. I never hear of u pers being de- terred from attending church by readn, it, Ido not know of its having interfes with auny christian work 1 have attempted to do. I regretits publication and circulation but am not prepared to make a martyr of it and consign it to tho flames liko some of my brothers here. 1 simply take out of it what Ineed aud that takes only s fow minutes, We should co-uperate with the editors, pub- lishers and reporters, and work to wake the world better. Let us try t build up the best city, the best city, the best conutry." Key. Lora saia that a man had @ right to swear or pluy ball on Bunday or read the Sunday paper if be chose, but christians whould not do those things, Itev. Williamson opposed the Sunday pa- per because it guve ite employes no day of rest. Key. Blving was glad the Sunday paper was no worse. He thought it was no use trying to oppose iv. He urged that more re- ligious articles should appear, b, tov. K. B. Graham thought that the Chris- tian people should subscribe in such great numbers for the papers us 10 dictate their politics. Ou motion the secretary was instruoted to ask publishers of the variaus dallies of the Ly 1f they would not publish definite week- duy rates without the Bunday eaition, v, Willard Beott moved that I-Il.} rs bo asked to present & condensation of "33 day uews inthe Monday paper and the mo- tion prevailed, e Piles!
