B THE GREAT LANGUAGES, English Comes First, German Second and KFrench Third. The language in which Shaxespeare and Milton wrote was the language of less than 6,000,000 human beings, and when Washington was president less than 16,000,000 of people used the Eng- lish tongue. At the sume time (time of our first president) Krench wus the mother tongue of at least 80,000,000 of peonle, and hy some writers it is said that 50,000,000 of French-speaking poo- ple-were living at the time of the revo- ution of 1789, This state of affairs is now completely reversed. Between forty and fifty years ago the English language equaled the German in the cumber of those who spoke it, and now the latter is left far behind in the race. German is now spoken by 10,000,000 per- sons in the Austro-Hungarian empire, by 46,000,000 in the German em- l;ix-c, by 40,000 in Belgium, and y about 2,000,000 in the little Alpine country of Switzerland, Besides the countries mentioned, in which German is usually classed us the native tongue, it is spolen by about 2,000,000 persons in the United States and Canada, giving a total of about 60,000,000 who use the German language. £ With French the case is much the sawe, but the gain during tho last cen~ tury has been smaller than that of Ger- man, French is now spoken by the 88,- 000,000 inhabitants of F'rance, by 2,250~ 000" people o Belgium, by 200,000 in Alsace-Lorraine, by 600,000 in Switzer~ land, 1,600,000.in the United States and Canada, 600,000 in Haytiand 1,500,000 in Algiers, India, the West Indies and Africa, iu all 45,000,000, English is spoken by all but less than 1,000,000 in the 86,000,000 in the British isles, by probably 57,000,000 of the 60, 000,000 inhabitants now believed to be in this country, by 4,000,000 in Cavada, by 8,000,000 in Australia, by 1,700,000 West Iudians und perhaps by 1,000,000 in India and by other British colonies, bringing the total to over 100,000,000, For 25 years 1 sullered from bolls, eryeipelas nd other blood affections, taking during that ‘time great quantities of different medicines with- out giving e any perceptible relief.
