Refused a Permit by the License Board, The license board resumed work yesterday afternoon by granting ¥d Mauer a license to continue selling liquor at 1212 Farnum street. Then the board took up the protest against E. G. Floyd & Co., the Diamond, 1313 Doug- las street, with Chief of Police Seavey and Captain Mostyn and Sergeants §Sigwart and Haze as witnesses, The protest charges that ‘‘the applicants are not such men to whom the law provides a license may issue, aud that within the last year they have vio- lated the laws of the state and the ordinances of the city relative to the sale of intoxicat- ing liquors, and by keeping gambling fixtures in & room over their saloon.” In the protest Chief Seavey continues: *“While I have no positive evidence that other laws or ordi- nances have been violated during the last twelve months, it has been frequently ro- ported to mo_that Messrs, White, Kennedy, Morrison und Hebbins permitted gambling in the room over the Diamond, where the gambling fixtures are kept.” The officers named were put upon the witness stand and testifisd that they had visited the gambling room several times and always found the doors securely locked When entrance had been gained they roulette, faro, hazard, billiard and poker tables; men playing cards; never saw any money in sight, but did see chips such as are uscd in gambling, When asked to name some of the men he had seen_in there, Captain Mostyn said, “Olsen, Donnelly, Nestlehouse, Roberts' and Kirk.” Some time ago a gentleman named E. J. Smitn of Cincinnaty, O., told him he had been fleeced out of 700 up in the Diamond. Other persons appeared before the board and testified that chey had visited the Dia- mond gambling rooms; had seen gambling there, and not only this, butone gentleman testifiea to having gambled in that place, Colonel E. G, Floyd of Floyd & Co., testi- fied that the “& Co,” of the firm consisted of White and Morrison, and that the firm had nothing to with the second floor, where the gambling is going on. He said that the pool room in the rear of the saloon, is run by Morrison, White, Bibbens & Kennedy. He said that Floyd & Co., lease the building from the Caldweli estate. This closed the hearing of the Diamond matter and the poard proceeded to hear a lot of premiscuous explanations from various saloon men relative to postponemetns, ect. LADIES' RELIEK CORPS, ° The Second Annual Installation Ex- ercises Propercly Celebrated. At G. A. R. hall lst cvening occurred the second annual installation of officers of the Ladies’ Relief Corps. The first feature on the programme was an address by the out- going president, Mrs. J. S, Wood. She gave a summary of the work done by the corps during her term of office. Tho speech was an interesting one, being a history of tho corps from its begmning. The society now numibers thirty seven membors and has ex- pended over §300 1n relief of the destitute widows and orphans of veterans and of tho old soldiers themselves in less than a year. ‘“‘America” was then sung by the audience, The following ofticers were installed : President, Mrs, Sarab E.
