SMART YOUNG FLORIDANS, The Ship-Builders and Navigators of Rob Roy's Roost. There is living at a point on Bast bay a remarkable family of five boys. one of whom is a young lady, says the Pensa- cola News. “They are thus all called boys beeause the boys consider their sistor to be one of thoiselves, sho boing in nearly every respoct as handy as & boy should be, and sharing the inbors of her brothers a great deal more than sho should be expected to. But she does it in spitc of ‘any protest which the boys might make, and which, to do the latter justice, they are continually offering. But they find her very useful and are very proud of hor. The boys are F., H. and B. S., and the youug lady is Miss Margaret Axelson. Togethor they are a tenm that cannot be beaten in an) country. Coming of old Norse stock, they possess that sturdiness common to their ancestry, and also that conversa- tion characteristic of their race, of which a life-time spont on the shoves of this harbor ~ always Dbristting with the marks of a forward age has not robbed them. Their.place of dence they have named Rob Roost. They are known the countr) through for their hospitality, and the ranger is ever welcome at their doo hey have fought the battie of i almost nlone, huving been left orphuns at & comparatively carly age. And they have fought it successfully, now possessing & competentey that shuty out the shadow of a want se far us the necessaries of life may be concerncd, and they are daily adding to their 11t tle fortune, They can draw the lines of a ship, hew the timbers, build and Inunch her, and then sail her around the world. They have done it, They ave doing it. The schoouner Axel: i fine little vessel which they have built, is now somewhere on the gulf under commuand of Captain G., one of the brothers who is a most expert nuvigi- tor. The other brothers and sisters aro now cngaged in building another and a larger vossel which . is well under way, and which when completed and launched, will probubly be the staunchest oraft sailing the Mexic sen. The draughtsimun who furnished the lines upon which she is being constructed isone of tho brothers, the carpenters who ure building her are the draughtsman and ‘his brothers and sister, and the master who will sail her will be one of the boys, who imuy take the remainder of the family for his crew. For miles and miles in all directions from the IRoost the boys hayo seoured the forests looking tor natural crooks to be used as timbers, a groat many of which they have found and used as such. The work £0 far pro- gressed that the stern will be put in in afew days, when planking will be in order. The vessel will be fastened after the most approved puttern, and she will measure, when finished,” eighiy feet over all. have a beam of twonty-four fect and has now a keel seventy-one foct in length. At the depth of from 60 to 200 feet the crevice matter, consisting of silica, calcite and ore, together with the su rounding wall rock; is a solid frozen mass, says an exchange. McClellun is one of the highest eastern spurs of the Snowy range. It has the formr of a horseshoe, with a bold escarpment of feldsparic rock nearly two thousand feet high, which, in somo places, is nearly perpendicular, In descending into the mine nothing unusual occurs until a depth of eighty or ninety feet is reached, when the frozen territory begins and continues for over two huundred feet. There are no indicationsof a thaw summer or win- ter, The whole of the 200 feet of frozen walls is surrounded by massive rocks. The miners, being unable to excavate the frozen material with pick and drill in the usual way, found that the only way to mine in this pecviiar loae was to kindle a huge fire against the *face” of the tunael andin the morning take out the ore that had been thawed loose dur- ing the night. Ex fact, this was the only mode of mining used while going through the frozen belt some ten or fifteen years since, The tunnel is uow many hun- dred fect deep, and still there is no diminution of the frost, There is, as far us can be seen, no opening or chan- nel through which the frost coald pos- sibly have reached such a depth . from the surfuce. Besides this there are magy other mines in the same vicinit; in u like frozen state. . ‘The theory isthag the roclk was depos- ited in glacial times, when there wns cold enough to freeze the Very eirth's heart. In that case the mine is an ice- house whose stores hate remnined un- thawed for at least eighty thousand years, B The phenomenon is not uncommon or inexplicable when openings can 'be found through which a current of"nir can pass; but cases which, likg fthe Stevens mine, show no opening for air- currents, must be referved to imbedded icebergs of the gla e Pozzoni's Complexion Powder is univer- sally known and everywhere es! ed as the only powder that will improve the couiplex- ion, eragicate tan, frecklos, snd all ‘skin discuses, : - e Aaron Burr in Georaia. In March. 1807. Aaron Burr, while under .guard, crossed the rver near Fort Huwkins, Burr and his guards were drenched and chilled by the freezs ing rains when they reached the river, says the Macon Evening News, He was captured below the Tombigbee river in Alabama, and was required to ride on horseback at the rate of forty miles per day. The guards, with their prisoner, crossed the river in canoes, in which their camp equipage was placed and by the side of their canoes their bhorses swam until they reached the Oconee, where, at Fort Wilkinson, they crossed in the first ferryboat they had seen in the whole route; and a few miles beyond that river they were shel- tered by the first roof—a house of enters tainment kept by Mr. Bevan. The house is standing at this day near Mil- ledgeville, S T, Recovery of ONd Treaaurs The Ephemeris of Atheus reports tYiay a number of coffers containing 60,000 gold and silver Spanish pieces of the year 1666 have been bauled out of the sea near the island of Andros. Six bronze cannon were found near the cof» fers, and it is concluded thav the whole cume from the wreck of a Spanish mans of-war, -————— Mrs, Winslow’s Soothing Syrap is an unexcelled medicine for childreu while teething. 25 cents a bottle.
