JONES, DISEASES OF WOMEN, Office, &, K. Cor. 1th and Douglas Sis,, Omalia Neb, BY AIR TO THE POLE. Alleged fnvention of an Aerial Ral way. David Thayer, A, M., M. D., is just out with a pawphlot’ setting forth a mighty novel proposition, in detail, on “An Aerial Railway for the Explora- tion of the Polar Zone, and for Air Transit Over Waterand Land,” Noth- ing moro readable in tho Jules Verne line was ever ovolved in brief, writos & Boston corrospondent. This invention of the naerial railway points the way to the first step in the solution of the sublime problom. The acrial railway consists of an apparatus which is acted upon by two forces, the first of which is the wind acting by obligue impact upon the surface of acro- plancs or Kites, and the second, the re- sistance to that same force, by means of drag at opposite ends of throe or mo draught lines. Iorce No. 1 is the di- rect action of the wind upon the aero- planes. Force No. 2 is tho resiftance which the drag offers to that of the wind, By the judicious use of these two forces we are enublea to travel over water and land, over s und oceans; to eaplore unknown regions of the polar zone; to cross the prai and pampas of North and South America. the arid stoppes of Russin, the sandy plains of Africa; o ourry the lifeline and needod supplies to shipwrecked mariners; to ascend to great attitudes for purposes of observation; to visit with littlo ex- pense and trouble any of the islands of the Pacific archipolagos; to reach the Northern and Southern Poles, and other tocalities which, by other meuns, are diffieult of access. The apparatus consists of soveral sor- ies of neroplanes or kites, and the drag linos of these kites areattached to somoe impediments or drags. .in the water the drag may consist of & number of boats fastened together, sometimes called a catamaran, to increase the ro- sistance of the wind, thereby diminish- ing the velocity of the neroplanes or kites, If the catamaran be insullicient in its resistance tothe force of the wind acting upon the neroplaues or kites, we may ndd logs of wood to the drag, or any other method of increasing 1ts weight and resistance. The drag, when traveling over the land, consists* of wheels and axles with a brake; when traversing over ico it consists of honvily laden sledges and any additional device to increase the resistance. At the very top of the figure are four balloons. The use of these balloons'is to keep the kites aloft when the wind dies away. These aeroplanes, or kites, may be multiplied at plensure, nnd ench kite may be made more buoyant by in- ing the number and size of the balloons, and the principal use of the balloons is to keep the kites aloft in the absence of the wind. If there were ways a wind to be depended upon there would be no use for balloon: In cach series of acroplanes, orJkites, there ure two broad. iarge kites, and to the right and left of them ure two narrow kites which we call wings. To the outer edges of these wings are attached ropes called brac: When in the course of the voyage it becomes necessary to change the direction of the fight, in order to avoid an island, an iceberg. or the enemy, if desirable to evade such dangpr: escape 1o star- board, we would haui upon the right- hand braces, thereby flexing the star- board wings. which would drive our ap- paratus away to the right. If, on the contrary, it becomes nccessary to es- cape to the left, we would huul on the port braces, thereby so fixing the port wings that our whole apparatus would be carried to the left. If, in case of voynges of obser n, it becomes necessary to seek greater or less alti- tudes, we effect this by hauling on the haylards which are attached .to the lower edges of tho aeroplanes or Kites, the lower ends of which haylards are within reach of the voyagers. JULIET'S BALCONY. A Funny Episode in the Early Career of Joe Joff:raon. From the “Autobiography of Joseph Jefferson,” now being published with pictures in the Century,is taken tie following: ‘I have before said that'a portion of my early theatrical education was drawn from hard work in tne pairt and property room of a theater, so thav when 1 became a manager | delighred in the ‘get-up,’ s iv was technically called, of plays, so far as our slendér means would permit. To fashion and paint a rustic bridge, with a wide board behind it, set upon two shaky trestles, for. Rob Ioy to cross over, was a special privilege. A profile boat for the *Lady of the Lake’ was another deiight. This perfectly unsafe-looking skiff was always set on i trunk mounted upon four little wooden wheels that no amount of black-lead could induce to keep from squeaking. The rope must be steadily pulled—the slightest jerk and over goes her ladyship into the guuze wuters. But let us return to the story. **Romeo and Juliet’ beine announded, 1 felt that the balcony scene should hayve some attention, and I conceived a sun- ple and economical 1dea that would ena- ble me, nt a day’s notice, to produce the effect in a manner ‘hitherto unpar- alleled in the anpals of the stage.’ Skirmishing about the wharves and the ship chandler’s, I chanced to light upon a job lot of empty candle boxes. taking a quantity the cardboards were thrown in, and nothing makes o finer or more imposing but unsubstan - tinl balustrade than cardboard, The boxes, placed one by one on top of each other and painted a nent stone color, formed a pleasing architectural pile. Before the play began I had cautioned Juliet that when she leaned her cheek upon her hand she should let her elliow rvest gracefully butlightly on the frail structure that was to supportit. Romeo also had to be cautioned, for, us the house of Capulet was already about his ears, it was necessary that at least his shins should escape any contact with the foundation. The scene opened with a backing of something, supposed to represent the distant city of Verona, with my new balcony in the foreground, Romeo and Juliet were warm and energetic in their love pas- sages, but still acted with becoming care and gentle consideration for the balcony ahout which they fluttered, All seemed to be going well till presently there came the sound of half-suppressod laughter from the audience. ‘Crogk- er,) said I, from the win 4 ‘are you shakin the balcony ‘No,” he whispered, ‘I haven’t touched it,” ‘What are they laughingat, then?’ ‘Can’t imagine,’ saidhe, The laughter increased uad it was quite evident that something not announced in the bills had gradually attracted the “attention of the audience "till at lastthe whole house had discovered the mishap, Juliet retreated in amazement and Romeo rushed off in despair and down came the curtain, ST rushed upon the staga to find out what had occurred, when, to my horror® I discovered that one of the boxes had been placed with the unpainted side out, on which was emblazoned n semi- circular trade murk, settiog forth thas the very corner-stone of Juliet’s bale cony contained twenty pouuds of the | best ‘short sixes.’” Change of 1ifo, backnobe, monthiy ireogu nge o l-rtun-.“;ot n-,b'- are cured by 3r.
