THE GREAT TIGER COMBINE. It is Preparing to Reopen Business at the O1d Stand. WITH BUCKING IMMUNITY, Finding the C. ission, the Police and Cushing Probably “All Right" Tiger Again Invites Vice tims to His Lair. They're All Right. It is @ well known fact that, for months, gambling :has boen carried on with impunity right in the very heart of the city. Repeated “raids,” however, havo been made, but in no instance could a trace of the gamblers be found. They had beon spirited the rooms when found occupied a gang of men who were their mental condition by or indulging in the com- innocuous game of bilfards stances the rooms, however, had ated twenty-four hours pr s Lo tho raid, sud when the police arrived only the stillness of a temole provailed. facts show, in the estimation of knowing ones, that the polico are winking at th the detectives are in collusion with the gamblers, and us a con- soquence that the managers are roveling in the ill-gotten and liberal earningsof the business. These earnings, from the fact that the number of houses “protected’ is comparatively few, have been equal to what they were in the palmy days when the propriotors rolled in money. ‘Tliey are not anxious to_relinquish their grip, while the immunity they have onjoyed inspires them 10 still further attempt to ' crusl the smaller firms and to branch out themselves on a scate equal to that of other days. Over the Dian:ond saloon on Douglas street Morrison, of Morrison White, bas for six months been running a house wh roulotte and stud poker games running both day and night. Kennedy & Bevins have rented the floors over the lurf Kxchange on Douglas street near Thirteenth, their old staad, and intend to open on a large scale in a few days. William Donnelly, who has also been run- ning another place, intends to rent the floors over Hornberger's saloon, where Morrison’s gambling rooms forme were located. This combino practically controls the situation and thus far is said to have been able to crush out any and all newecomers who attempted to open up in the business. The latest “raid” took place only a short time ago, but all the gamblers had been warned before hand and the raid resulted in u fizzle. The gamblers boast that the chief of volico and & majority of the police comm all right,” whatever that may mean now bouder th because they have bogun Cushing is “all right.” Whethe arrived at this conclusion because they have been notified that they may run their houses on the quiet, or whether they expect him to do something in return for tho money they apent to eloct him, 18 not known, Certai it is, the alleged *‘fear” which the gamblers claimed to be laboring nader during Broatch’s “law and order” administration has dis P peared and Mr. Cusning's incumbenuy with the “all right” commissioners are presumed to be the causes of i improving rewding aratively ve faro, havo been column of rhetoric, said an American statesman. Itis a fact, es- tablished by the testimony of thousands of people, that Hood's Sarsaparilla docs cure sevofula, galt rheum, and other dis- ~enses or affections ariring from impu; state or low condition of the blood. It also overcomes that tired feeling, cre- atesa good appetite and gives stre: to every partof the system. i WILL LIMIT THE L1C Inportant Action in the Matter of ranting Permits to Sell Lig:or. Ata meeting held yesterday the license board decided to shut down on the practice of giving so many licenses to one man or firm und particularly to brewing companies, Just what the limiv will be was not fully fixed upon, but probably not more than two 0 one person or firm. This decision was reached on general principles. The matter was brought up by Mr. Gilbert, who, with other members of tho board, thought that a quostion of law as well as the question of monopoly might, if the matter was put to a sharp test, come in with great force. The law ‘lrovide- that no man can sign more than one liquor bond as principal or surety. 8 In uccordance with the decision of the board, as noted, @ third application from Max Schroeder to sell liquor at 2057 Cuming street was refused. i Another spplication from Jacob Lutz to run a saloon in a part of the city, 1924 South Twentieth street, different from that for which he was refused a license at a previous weeting, was also denied. The reason was the sawe as before, viz, that Luiz runs too tough a place. Tne following wore granted saloon li- censes: Richard Wilde, 1124 Farnawm; Thomas A. Dillon, 108 South Fourteenth; Arthur Rothery, 424 South Tenth; A. H. A trio of tall redskins, garbed in a semi- clvilized fushion, which included hats, coats, blankets and mocasins, were the objects of «considerable curiosity in the crowded walt- ing room of the Webster stroet depot late yesterday afternoon. The particalar thing that made thew interesting was a little smoking scene which they enacted while ‘waiting for the train. It was opened by one « of thew givinga mild grunt. On hearing this &runt, another of the party produced a huge, rod stonoe pipe, having a big, rough wooden stem ubout two feet long. The bowlof the pipe must have held fully a double bandful of wbaceo, and it was filled to the top, then rammed down with a small wooden club. After it had been carefully exammned from all sioes una both ends, & matoh was applied, and the great clouds of smoke which began rolling from between the manipulator's teeth brought the station agent running into the room to see if the deper was on fire. After the Indian who had lighted the vipe had taken about a dozen whiffs he passed it along to the brother next to bim, who, after satistylog Lis frst cravigs, sent the pive along to No. 3. They kept passing and re- passing the pipe around their little circle until traio tine. The Scrape With a Bank Presidentan ActorGot Into, Frank Lane, the actor, tells a story of the late Henry Richmond, who was a remarkably bright comedian iu hisline, says the Chicago Herald, One day in an eastern city Richmond went to the bank to cash a draft. "It was for $04.04, money due, und Harry was paid $90 in bills, 84 in silver and four pennies. The genniel he %nfhfll in his palm after he salted the bills and silver awa in his pocket, and, as he left the bank, he met the president of the institution on the steps. It was a warm day and the banker had removed his high white hat and was mopping his brow with a white silk handkerchief. Richmond saw him and in an absent-minded way he dropped the odd dour pennies into the plug hat, saying: "I never refuse an appeal for alms, my man. The pennies dropped with an awful racket, and when he realized what had happened the banker was mad.” He had Richwond arrested for insulting him, but in court the comedian gave such a plausable ex- planation and made such n witty speech that the justice let him off with a repri- mand, * yr— Have you tried MeClurg’s Pastry Wafer Sodast They are de THE OMAHA DAILY BEE! The Lincoln Postofiice, Tur Bee representative called on Mr. Wat- kins, the retiring postmaster, this morning and asked him jusc when he expected to be succeeded by Mr. Gere. He did not know for sure, but the uuderstanding was that the change would take place about the 13th, as his commission expired on the 12th. During Mr. Watkins’ admimstration of the office thern has been a marked increase in the busi- ness. When he took the ofice there were but six carriers; now there are fourteen, an increase of per cent, which 1s a better showing than is made by any other office in the United States. And each carrier today had more work to do thav the carriers had four yeurs sgo. The last quarter for 1888 showed a business of $10,471, that of 1859 817,709, October and November were the best October and Novemoer months in the Tiswry of the oftice, while the Decewber, or boliday month, thoogh larger than in 1888, fell fur short of the amounnt expected when compared with the increase in the other months of the year. This could probably be accounted for by the lack of the usual Christmas snow and cold weather, which left lots of holiday goods unsold. As to Mr, ine’ future he had not fully determined on his line of work, but he would remain 1a Lincolu. He bad still an itching desire for newsvaper work, but a democratio paper, to be a success, ought to have more democratic backing than Lincoln could produce, though he had always found the Lincoln republi- cans very liberal minded. Awmmon submitted to the anthropologi- cal section some interesting results of observations he had made in Baden. These observations related to 5,000 sol- diers. The tall men had generally long skulls and skulls, of medium length, whereas the short men bhad rouud skulls, Most of ‘the round-skulled men came from the Black forest; the long- skulled ususually belonged to the valley of the Rhine and were espz cially numerous in towns and in the = neighborhpod of the castles of ancient families. From this fact Herr Ammon concluded that the round- skulled men had been the original in- habitants of the Rhine valley, that meiv had been driven from it by loug- ! skulled invaders, and that the latter had established themselves near the sottlements of their victorious leaders. Having shown that there is a certal relation between the height of the fig- ure and the shape of the skull, Herr Ammon went on to indicate the rela- tion between fair hair and blue eyes. No fewer than 80 per cent of the men with blue eyes had fair hair. He found also that physical growth is generally quicker in tgne case of the brown-eyed than in that of the blue-eyed type.
