SEEKING THE MISSING LINK, The Road to Dakota Which Would Enrioch the Gate Clty. WYNN AND SMITH TALK. Khe Neal Estate Exchange will Send a Delegation to the Railroad Conference at Mitcholl December 17, Build the Roaw. or Wyun ot Yankton and J. K. Smith, ., of the Mitchell board of trade were present at the session of the real estate ex change and, in b s, urged Omaha o unite with tho § Dakota towns in building a railroad from that state to Omaha. “We want Omaha interested in South ta," said Mr. Wynn, “After visiting your city, L have come to the conclusion that you don't realize your own importance s a eity. Omaha is destined beyond question to @0 tho wholesalo business for the west, and South Dakota wauts to get in on the ground fully 60 per cent of and hoxs shipped to S City n South Dakota, were 1 to Sioux City because Omaha could ached because of lack of railway facilities, South Dakota had, at Yankton, a cement that was ahead of all other American voments and equal to the best imported Port- land ut, They wanted o find & market Bhiph not be 2 would be | el on v, December 17, to consider the sub of building a railroad to Omaha and re- quested thava committee bo appointed by the exchange to attend the meeting, Mr. J. K. Smith, when called upon by President Hartman, stated that it was sim- Ply & question as to whether Omaha wanted uhe trade of the Dakotas or not. The trade could bo secured by the expenditure of w lit- tle money and u gond deal of enterprise in the construction of a railway from Omaha to Mitchell, The towns along the proposed line were all enthusinstically m_favor of tho scheme and w terial aid. The veople of Mitchell liked to come to Omaba but they didn’t like the dea of having to go by the way of St. Paul to get here. Mr. Smith.waated a committes appointed to at: tend the conference ot Mitchiell next Tues- day. The exchange rooms were crowded and deep interest was shown in the matters pre- sented by the Dakota visitors. ‘The exchange will send u representative committee 1o tho conference at Mitchell. After the Dakota men had been heard Mr, Ben K. Smith was called upon. He has just returned from an examination of the coal mines on the Alliance branch of the Iur- lington road and ut the southwestern siope of the Black Hilis. He spoke of the vast ox- tent of the mines and described ths supply as inexhaustible, “‘An entire plateau,” he said, ncar the foot of the hills is underlaid with a bed of coal that ranges from four to ten feet i thickness and eighteon feet in width. The coal is a very ' pure, hard, bituminous quality without any traces of sulphur. An excellent coke is made from the screening: The veins are roofed by nature with solid sandstone, mak- ing the cost of tunnelin inexpens The mines are above tue railroad, so that the coul is loaded into thecars by chutes, saving a great deal of handling, The road grade 1s such that an engine can bring thirty fivo loaded cars to Omaba. M Smith thinks that these facts indicate that Omaha can yot have her supply of coal from the Black hills cheaper than from any other mines. The_distance of the mines from Omana is 571 miles—over two hundred miles nearer than the Rock Springs mine Samples of the coal and coka were on ext Somehody Ignorant of the Questions Hetween Lincoln and Omab ¢ The general managers of the Interstate Commorce railway association at Chicago scem to have worked themselves into a state of desperation and deep seated agony over the adoption of new freight rates in Ne. braska. A special dispatch to Tue Beg says that at their meeting yesterday this contro- versy was taken up and after an all day dis- cussion was referred back to a confimittee of arbitrators with a resolution instructing them to prepare a schedule of new rates, both freight and local, for Nebraska roads and submit the same to a mecting of the man- agers Wednesday, December 18, and that in thie meantime no change should be made by any road in the state of Kansas to prevent the acceptance and adoption of the-same. In the most reluctant manner Chairman ‘Walker gave out what is descibed us being 8 very startling admission, to the effect that on December 10 the Burlington und_ Missouri Pacific roads put into effect their Nebraska Dasis of rates, placing Lincoln on @ par with Omaha, which they agreed to postpona untit final action had been tuken by hese general managers on the whole question, According to the general freight agents of at least three interested lines torminating here Chair- man Walker is either wrongfully reported or makes o deliberate misstatetiont of the fucts. In the first place, it was the Burling- ton, Union Pacific and Northwestern that put these rates into effect last Tuesday. Tho fissouri Pacific was not in it only by force of circumstances, In the second place, the association was given to understand, ‘while in session lust Wweel, that these rates would go into effoct on thut day, Consequently, the claim of an agroed postponement is absolutely false, In the third place, Liucoln and Omaha have, with 3-cenv diffeventials, now added, Always been on an equal footing. There- Tore, there can be no “practical surronder by all the roads in Nebraska to Lincoin and the political supremacy of that city,” It scems to be u matter of imnossibility for the asseciation managors t understand that these new rates are simply a reduction of the local tariff from Omaha to points in the state. They do understand, however, that this reduction puts Omaha jobbers in po- tion to competo with Chicago wholesalors on business west of the river and that is what hurts, A prospectus of the Chicago Union Trans- fer rallway company hus been received, It is the latest thing out and proposes a corpora- tion the principle of which is on the bank, mercantile and exchange clearing house basis, for tho business of transferring cars, freight in car load lots, eic., at Chicago. e company is stocked for §2,000,000, Trafilo nager Mellen has re- from Now York and was closeted a frfiah-r part of the day with Vice President Holeomb, F. Mr. Aldridge was for several years, and uutil quite recently, station agent Tor thie Union Pacifie at Schuyler. An official of that company bas been heard to make the re- mark: “We hold the key to the situation and can use it wtour leisure.” The samo entlemen contends that these rates do not riug the tariff down to the sum of the two locals, from Chicago to Omaha and from Omaba to interior points. Furthermore he eousiders them as only temporary, and lable to change any aay. = —— Chavge of life, backacke, moathly irregu larities, boi flashas, are cured by Dr. Miles' Nervioe.
