An Evening With the Hungarians. A pleasanc and interesting evening was that spent by the young ladies of the Sacred Heart academy, Park Place, with the Hun- garians, It was the third tnis scholastic term of that series of fine literary entert: ments inaugurated at the academy four years ago, and successfully continued up to the present. It wus encouraging proof that western girls are keeping abreast of the times in thus broadening and deepening the bed of their historical studies. The vast array of facts aud the sober and solid method of argument employed each month by these dihgent workers prove a valuable instruction for the less fortunate ones who have neither time nor opportunity for such reading. Fourof the essays by the graduates gave the salient features of Magyar life, manners und literature, while the three others dealt with the biographies of individual Hunga- rians whose decds allied them with more surring umes, upon more conspicuous scenes, The iustructors hold that Lue preparation reauired for such intelligent work as that indicated by these wonthly ex- creises, must form the tastes of the pupils to wholesowe literature, and thut there was little fear of their making a perverse selece tion of books, In the matter of good music, the numbers were unusually attractive, The vocal piecos were romarkubiy fine, y *The low’s Farewell,”are ailegro of exquit sung by two fresh, young voices, tifultrio, “'O Restless Sea,” anandante plain tively recalling pust memories, was well ren- dered, as was also the **Last Dre eaw,” @ bal 8d of ulmost equal beauty and tenderness, in which Miss Lowry made her first appearance as a soloist. A delicate and graceful chorus by the junior choir closed the vocal pro- gramme. ‘I he instrumental pieces showed a decided aduence in the apprecistion of classical musie. The ‘“Entree” and *Tarautelle,” though of the order, dispiayed the lighter sud more elegant style of playing. But, the masterpicce of the evening was Von Flotow's “Martha' salon THE superbly execnied on two McCreary and Lowe. One could almost near the plottings of the wily court lady in tho first three acenes, the duct between the Indies and the trio with Fristan. The_roll- ing up and down of the oct in the sherift scone had a magnificent and powerful effoct. All the liveliness in action and tuncfulncss in music of this popuiar opera were ably brought out by these two ac young ladies, pianos by Miss LITERATURE. In a letter written the following day we find the key-nota to his subsequent carcer: “Solemn and mighty are the respon sibilities now upon me, but let me not shrink from them, for Christ says: ‘My gra sufficient for thee.’ Of the wonderful success of his lab auring the following seven years to 1855 with the many thrilling weidents of those times two chapters ha n written. 55 he preached his first sermon in ana at the close of the service he was d by Governor Ricl n to ke his home 1 “the city that be.” Of Omaha in these days & letwr in the Home Mission- ary, says: “It is growing very rapidly, and scems destived to be & place of much im- portance.
