All Won't Ride, Some of the letter carriers deny the story printed concerning an attempt by them to boycott the street railway company begause that organization would not permit all the carriers to ride for the amount appropriated for mail delivery servico by the government, They claim that no meeting has been held for that purpose, and that no action has been taken at any meetng advocating such a course. There Were No Bidders, United States Marshal Slaughter offered the Loup City rolling mills at public sale yes- terday morning, but thero were no bidder: This is the second unsuccessful attempt made to dispose of that property, therefore t is evident that another appraisement will ave to be ordered. The ‘present appraise- ment, $20,000, is considered more than the mill is worth. —— Adelaide Gertrude's Whereabouts, “Mrs. W. C. Dallany, a heart-broken mother,” is the signature of a letter received by Chief Seavey. The informa- tion filed charges him with having attempted to bribe Commissioner O'Keeffe by offering him an interest in the firm's contract if he ‘would favor the contractors’ claims then be- fore the commissioners. The bribe is alleged to have been offered on the first of August. Ryan was taken before Judge Hopewell and his bond fixed at $1,000. He was re- leased upon bail, Dennis Cunningham be- coming his suraty. The Omaha Coffin Company. Articles of incorporation of the Omaha CofMin Manufacturing company were filed to- day with the county clerk. The capital stock s $50,000, $30,000 of which is sub- scribed, and the nature of the business is the manufacture und sale of all kinds of under- takers' supplies, This company has purchased the plant and entire stock of the defunct Western Casket cowpany, aud will commence business at once, Thoy propose to enlarge tho plant and enter into the manufacture of first class Roods with the energy and push characteris- tic of the wen connected therewith, The of- ficers ure A. Half a day's work more would finish the job of grading, but Phelan has not made any attempt to complete the work for over six weeks, and the sections of broken side- walks are piled up useless upon one side, The people iu the vicinity have asked Phelan for \he privilege of replacing the walks at their own expense, but, it is said, he declares he will tear thew up if they put them down, ‘The citizens tuereabouts may have to wade through mud all winter, and they feel in soything but an awiable mood. it iy Eurcka, The motto of California meavs, I have found it. An Affecting Scene in the District Court Yesterday Afternoon. “He is not guilty! You shall not convict him! Oh, my poor boy! What a place is this for justice!” These words were wrung from the very soul of Mrs. M. B. Dutton, the heartbroken mothor of Edward B. Dutton, the young man who has been on trial in Judge Hope- well’s court this week charged with grand larceny. The mother has been a constant attendant at the trial this week, and also at the pre- Liminary hearing in the police court some time ago. Traces of anxiety have been de- picted on her face, but there was also a mix- ture of fear and nope, kind-hearted friends having cheered her up and assurcd her of the successful outcome of the triul. The caso was' given to the jury about 5 rnoon, and after being ty minutes they filed into prisoner anxiously scanned s of tho jurors as they took their seats, in a vain endeavor to read in their 1n- movable features some trace of the result. His mother, from her seat in the corner near the jury box, leancd forward, inteat upon ing every word as Clerk’ Moores went through his ususl formula of questions. When the verdict was handed to the clerk the faces of both the prisoner and his mother botrayed the intense feeling under which both were laboring. The jury returned a verdict of “‘guilty ns charged in the indictment,” finding the value of the property stolen to be $252.66, und rec- ommended the prisoner to the mercy of the court. They were immediately excused, and not until then did the fuli force of tne verdict seeni to become plain to the Lo beings most mterested. Dutton broke down and commenced cry- ing. M Dutton ran to him and embraced him, giving utterance, amidst her sobs, to the exclamations which commence this arti- cle. Her grief was heartrending, and even the bailiffs, who sce many distressing scenes, were touched and withdrew. The lawyers and others in attendance quickly withdrew, @ suspicious moisture bedimming the eyes ot nearly evory man in the room. Judge Hopewell directed one of the bail- iffs to conduct the prisoner and his mother into his private room for a time, but even there the mother’s hearthroken sobs sounded through the building. Expressions of pity were head on every side. In a short time Dutton was removed to the jail to await sentence, his mother going with him to see whero he was to be imprisoned. During the interval between the exit of the jury and their return, another scene was en- ucted, which is an important step in a tragedy which had its beginning last June, when the httlo infant of Lena Marsh died under circumstances which led to the im- prisonment of the mother on the charge of willful murder. The young woman was brought before Judge Hopewell by County Attorney Ma- honey, accompanied by her attorney. She was dressed in a neat black suit and showed no traces of her imprisonment. “The prosecuting attorney prepared to read the information, when the attorney for the prisoner asked that the reading be waived. Mr. Mahoney declined to grant this request und the information was read in full, reciting the facts as heretofore published, and charg- ing the prisover with the wilful wmurder of her vnnamed infant, During the reading the young mother's face was averted and she bit her Lips nutil it seemed the blood would burst from them. When the reading was finished the prisoner arose and plead not guilty, after which she was taken back to Jjail. Her at- torney requested further time tp prepare for triul, which was granted. In the case of Shinn vs. Shields & Con- nors, asuit for damages for non-compliance with'a contract, which was on trial all day before Jndge Wakely, the defendant was granted leave to amend his answer, and the plaintiff was given until Monday to proceed to trial or ask for a continuance. Josiah S. McCormick et al. has commenced suit in foreclosure azainst William A. Frye and his wife to recover $700 on three notes. John L. Wiles and James Thompson have brought suit in foreclosure agamst Silas W. McCoy et al. A. W. Baldwin has filed a lengthy petition in the district ceurt in which he alleges that he made a verbal agreement of co-partner- ship with Mattiew Swerdfeger, in the busi- ness of conducting & chop house on South Thirteenth. On the 20th of October Swerd- feger drew all the firm’'s money out of the bank and appropriated itto his own use, and has at various tunes appropriuted the con- tents of the till. Not eatisfied with this income, Matthew executed a note to Uriah Swerdfeger and signed the firm’s name thereto. Baldwin prays for the recovery of the note and an accounting of the busi- ness of the firm, ‘The case of Brown vs. Ryan & Walsh, a suit for damages on u contract in connection with the plastering of the new county hospi- tal, is on trial before Judge Doane, In the case of Strassor vs. Gray, whore the mother sued her son upon a promissory note for £3,600, the trial of which occupled ~three days, the jury returned a verdict for the de. fendunt after being out ten minutes, The defense was that there was no consideration for the note, and that the son, Mr. Gray, signed it at tho request of his mother, when a minor. The jury found accordingly. Dou’t buy trashy imitations, Get the genuine Red Cross Cough Drops. THE CONSOLIDATION, The Moror Property Turned Over to the Strect Railway Company. Frank Murphy, president of the Omaha Street Railway company, returned from Bos- ton at 10 a. w., and at 2:30 p. m. a mecting of the directors and officers of the two street railway companies was held in the power house, when the plant, machinery and tracks of the Omaha Motor Railway company were formally turned over to the Omaha Street Railway company, and became its permanent property. From 2:30 until 6:30 p. m. the directors were closely closeted in executive session, The time was mainly spent in drawing up the papers, and as there is considerable de- tail work in connection, all were not finished and they remain yet unsigned. An adjourn- ment was then taken until 9 o'clock this morning. No action was takén in rezard t> the changing of directors or other officers. Mr. L. B. Wiliiams aod Senator Paddock bave announced thelr intention of resigning their positions as directors, and it is the un- derstanding that they will be succeeded by Dr, Mercer and J. J. Brown, of the Qmabi Motor Railway company, As Dr. Mércer is the ouly person who knows the workings of the motor company in detail, it will be neces- sary to make bim'a member of the board fo sixty days at least. The account of yester- day’s Ipl’ucl:mllm,'m. written in advance and publistied in an_enterprising evening paper, was the subject of considerable merriment among the members of the board lust even- ing, us none of the business wentioned was transacted. One of the results of the consolidation is the bringiag of the Sherman avenue motor line to schedule vime, Heretofore, the con ductors have been running the trains to suit their own convenience, and the service has been anything but satisfactory. An order has been promulgated that the cars shall bereafter be run six miautes apart orsome good excuse given for the dela Another is that the conductors shall repe for duty at the car barn on Commercial ave nue north of the fair grounds. This will put & stop to the abuse long practiced by the con- ductors of refusing to take on passeugers on their last trip 8o that the conductor and motorman would be saved a trip to the fuir grounds, Peculiac People.
