Mayor Broatch Opposes the Registra- tion Extension, The executive committee of the republican county central committee met Wednesday evening at the Millard kotel and adopted the following resolution, which was presented to Mayor Broatch yesterday morning: o His Honor, W. J. Broatch, Mayor of Omaba: At & mecting of the executive committee of the Douglas county republican committee, held at the Miliard hotel, Octo- ber 23, the following resolution was intro- duced and passed unanimously : Whereas, There is a general opinion among attornoys that any resolution passed by the city council of South Omuha, Neb., whereby the date of recistrations should be changed to others than those covered by the registra- tion law as passed by the last legisiature of Nebraska, illogal, void and in dicect conflict with such registration law, as enacted by the last legislature, Rusolved, That we, the executive commit- tee of the Douglas ‘county republican cen- tral committee, call the attention of the mayor and council, to this fact, aud ask them to refrain from any action in this mat- ter that would be illegal. Mr. Broatch said that before ascertaining what action had been taken by this com- mittee he had decided to veto the resolution anyway. SWill it come to you to be passed upon "’ “Since there is an additional expense of about §1,500 contemplated, I don’t see how the council can order it without my approval. Furthermore,” continued his honor, ‘‘you may quote me as saying that there is entirely too much disposition manifested to set aside the law, and, in my position, I cannot afford t0 b a party to any such methods. This act explicitly states that registration of voters shall take place on certain designated days, and only on those days. It therefore is not for the council of this to determine the constitutionality or validity of the law, That remains fora court of justice to de- cide.” A numberof lawyers were interviewed and they declared emphatically that the action of the council cannot stand, “While I have serious doubts avout the constitutionality of the law,” said Charles Offutt, ‘‘the city coun- cil has no authority for overriding or setting it aside. Hamilton—The law specifies certain days, “‘and them only.” 1 have not been able to find any provision justifying the council in its action. ~ Whether or not the ballot of a voter registered on any other than oue of the tive days designated could be accepted and counted is a matter that the courts would have to determine. Isaac E. Congdon—There’s too much room for argument in the matter to justify an off-hand opinion. A panel in the side of the latter was broken. The car had to be sent to the shop for revairs, while the front guards of Cusic's tram were badly bent, The motormen claim that thiese accidents are due to a lack of system on the part of the management.
