JURY COMMISSIONER, Judge Dundy Speaks of Him in an Intercsting Manner. Judge Dundy issued an order for the draw- ing of both grand and petit juries to serve at the November term of the United States circuit and district courts, ¥ I can tell you,” said his honor, “‘that it is no small job to select theso juries. The clerk and commissioner, whose duty it is to perform the work, huve anything but a soft Job on their hands.” Who is the commissioner!” “*A man whose politics are directly opposed 1o those of the clerk, and his namwe is Dr, Tilden." “1Does he gt anything for his services1” ‘‘Yes, $15 a term, and we have six terms a year, 'The statutory enactment provid- ing for a jury ‘commissioner,” con- tinued Judge Dundy, ‘is tho only fed- eral law know of in which the legislature acceded to volitical demands from the minority party in power. Of course, right after tho war, nearly all the clerks' appointed were republicans, and I presume that it was thought necessary to have them watched by democratic commis- sioners. “I have appointed three in my time, The first was John R. Porter, once the nominee of the democratic purty for governor of Ne- braska. He, held the place several years. He became so obnoxious, however, that I was compelled to remove him. He took two jurymen out of one satoon in Lincoln, and when 1 lectured him about forcing such characters upon the court, ho wanted to know where else I thought he could go to getdemocratic jurors. © “After removing Porter; H.-C. Tatt, who bad aiso been a candidate for governor, suc- ceeded. He served Lhree or four years, then Dr. Tilden came in." The judge grew quite reminiscent while talking of the manner in which men connive o get on tho jury. They resort to all sorts of schemes and misrepresentation, which makes it hard for the clerk and commissioner to always select qualified jurors, However, when parties who are objection- able succced 10 being drawn, and the court finds out who they are, he manages to get them informed that they had better ask to be excused or take the consequences of being bounced, In issuing his oraer the judge also ap- pointed Dave Mercer court crier. In the two other cases of diphtheria the whole family romained out two weeks, The caso that the paper spoke of, where the child of the family ned in school, was pneumonia. “'The article in the paper created some- what of an alarm among the paronts, which we would be glad to have you correct.” COUNC! He ns already removed about one thousand tons of carth, He will present a bill for this work to the council. The latter body also promised to order the grading of Bighteenth street from Farnam i Douglas, but the work has not yet been one, All the rock used in the old foundation and basement will be used in the new one. The smaller ones will be crushed and used in the concrete and the larger ones in the walls, The work of concreting will probably commence the latter part of this week. i An Important Element Of the success of Hood’s Savsaparlla is the fact that every pugchaser receives a fair equivalent for his money.
