Editor Vaughn of the Daily Democrat promises to have some fun with the commis- sioners over their slanghter of his bill for printing the delinquent tax list. His original bill called for 900 descriptions at and 20,817 descriptions at 23{ cents, for which hie wanted the modest sum of §2,029.01. He was allowed $i00 on account on a rough estimate that his real claim for this printing would amount to §624, and that $104 due him for printing road notices would make a total of a Iittle wore than $700 due him. When the claims got into the hands of County Auditor Evans, that gentleman found that Vanghn's publication included a whole lot of duplicetions and other errors and that he was really entitled to pay for publishing only 728 lot deseriptions at cents and 18,000 1and descriptions at 22{ cents. Just 8 little difference of %005 descrip- tions, ‘This cut the amount due the wily adver- tiser for the tax list publication down to £515.11. There is due him $104 for an alleged :ation of road notices, making a total #0.11. For work actually done the county has overpaid Vaughn about 350, but he has an election proclamation and sundry official matters in hand, the publication of which will balunce the account. . Vaughn won't let the matter rest Its Editor With the that his original claim of list publication is correct and must be paid. He claims that he has vised by aleading attorney that he cav collect the amount allowed by law for the puolication. Uhat is all_bosh,” was C Mahoney’s opinion on this claim. “The law fixes tho maximum rate and tho commis- sioners can take advuutage of any lower rate offered.” But Mr. Vaughn has another scheme, He claims that the figures bia_wera for cach insertion, and not for three insertions, as clamed by tho commissioners. M Vaughn claims the words, “3 in.,” meaning three insertions, were inscrted in the specifi- cations after the bids were received. “That's a lie,” said County Auditor Evans, when ne heard this claim. I wrote those words in myself when the specifications for bids were being made out, and Vaughn s better than to make any such claim.” *“Thero will be some fun out of this th yet,” said Commssioner O’Keeffe. “I fought this contract when it first came up, but the board allowed it, and you see the mess wi in. Thei ono good thing though. ~The row over this bill will s a notice to the people that the tax list hus been pub- lished. Tney would have never found it out any other Uil wager that Vaughe~ has_violated his contract and - misrepresented in the matier of circul He swore ho had acirculation of ove copies. All the papers 1 ever saw from his oftice was the pile of d with this tax List that was dumped in the commis- sianers’ room tho otherday. 1 guess Ill ask him to show up Iris circulation books just for the fun of it.” L Attention, Sir Knights, £ Mount Calvary commandery, No, 1: You will assomble promptly at the asylum at 1 p. m., this dute, to act as escort at the funcral of Sir Knight Hume.
