Address A. G, Buchanan & Co., Fremout, Neb, LOOKS STRANGE, DON'T IT? Two Very Queer Things Which Agi- tate Local Pohticians, Curbstone politicians are discussing every- thing from the hospital grade job down to campaign for coroner. One of the chief top: fcs that engages thelr attention is the mys- tery which surrounds the matter of selecting stose for the city hall buildiog, or in other y y ofine just what io. 8 behiind the Dodlin granite bid, and this seems to be very difficult of penetration, When Boss Stout was in the city two or three days ago ne stated to a roprosentative of Tk Ber that whilo it was true that he had been interested in Dodlin granito in his contract at Washington, he now has nothing more to do with it, Paul Vandervoort, he was the ag of the Dodlin people. It ul Vandervoort claims to be an old army ussociate of theirs. But this does not clear un the matter by any meaus, because Mr. Stout is not always as childiike and _bland as ho appears to bo. Another thing: Paul Vandervoort has been scen in ve ntidential talks with Council- nan Wheoler repeatedly, snd may pull some kind of string there, The thing that looks most singalar one of the city hall architects, Mr, Fowlor, is now outspoken for Dodlin ' granite, Just what has recently come over the spirit of his dreams caunot be divined. When the plans were first adopted Beindorf, his part- ner, was opposed to the light colored stono for' the base, and it was supposed that h reflected the views of Mr. kowler, He c tainly did reflect the views of other archi- tects, who are unanimous in the opinion that a dark stone should be used for the base. But Mr. Fowler now states that he 1s op- posed to any sombro colors in the city hall extorior, and that Coiorado red or brown stone would not show the artistic effect of the building that white or grayish stone would. Otiier architects ridicule the whole busi- ness and say that any artist would naturally insist that the base of the building should be of a darker color than the superstructure. They also call attention to the peculiar frenks of ornamentation, gargoyles and in- discriminate ginger-hread work that has been designed for the upper stories and on the cornices. These things would show in white colors very much to tho disadvantage of he building, be- cause they would be so much more promiuent. In the opinion of the best archi- ects, all of this e ornamentation is in bad taste on a public building, which should be plain and nmposing, 18 that “It scoms very ' said o prom Mason volitical wman, - “th ard of education conclude that it would rlers at a higher our build- per month, which cannot be duplicated in the city.
