A reat deal has been whispered around in regard to Nell King being allowed toconduct u bawdy house in the heart of Omaha after an order from the mayor 1o suppress her place had been issued. The origiual com- plaint was made by Mr. Wiley, then of the waterworks company. Mayor Broatch is- sued an order to Chicf Seavey to suppress the piace, but to give Miss King a reasonable time to vacate. The chief considered thirty days a reasonable time aua notificd the woman accordingly. She and her friends set about to squeich the order. All sorts of promiscs and threats were mado to Mayor Broatch. He was begged to rescind the order. Mrs, W. B. Birch, a_middle-aged lady re- siding on Twenty-fifth street, between Dodge and Farnam streets, met with a seri- ous accident Thursday eveing, while riding on umotor train, As the motor rounded the curve on Burt on to v y-sixth street the driver could not control the speed of the train because the brakes gave away. The train started down the incline at ahigh rate of speed. Mrs. Birch became trightened and jumped to the street, beliey— ing an accident was inevitable, \hc was thrown with vio ie full reudering her unconscious. The paving investigation committee of the city covncil met at the council chamber yester- day afternoon, all of the members of the com- mittee anda the board of public works being present. The action of the board aud the committee was gone over n fuli, Mr. Kier- vtead and Mr. Furay both sustained Mr. Gray’s statement that the work on Harney street had been stopped by Maor Balcombe after the boerd had decided that the work could go om, but that red blocks should not be used on any other street. The members stated that they had joined Major Balcombe in rejecting poor material whenever dnd wherever offered.
