The Incendiary’s Torch Makes Work For the Fire Fighters. AN UNPARALLELED DEMAND. Rev. D. M. Heimick, of Neola, In- dicted For Murder In the Sece ond Degro eral and Personal Fire Bugs at Work The fire bugs were abroad Tuesday night aud got in their despicable work in no less than four instances. The fire at Aylesworth’s barn, on Piorco streot, at 11:30 0'clock, was undountedly of incendiary origin, as no one was known to have been in the building for several hours previous to the outbreak of the fire, which was started in the middle of the haymow. Before this fire was fairly ex- tinguished another blazo broke out on the other side of the street, and u few doors to the east, in a small cottage. No one knows the origin of the e, and it is supposed to have also heen tho work of an incendiary, as the flames blazed up from the rear of the buildiug. It beeun to look as if an attempt was being made to ¢ out the nest of dis reputable dives that bavo full swing in that quarter, to which they have given the cx- pressive title of “Rotten Row." If such had actually been the case, it is yrobable thut a single respectable citizen would bave entered o of protest, except to prevent 1cot from interfering in any Wuy to #avo ¢ n o shinglo, But this was rot the intention of the fire bugs, who were determined to burn prop- erty, regirdioss of its character or location, Tho department was again called out at about 1 o'clock by @ blaze in the African Methodist chiurch on North Main streot. A large roll of cotton, saturated with oil, was burning in the center of vhe floor. Owing to its curly discovery it was extinguished be- fore any damage was done, The boys had not bad time to again get into bed before the continued whistling of locomotives in the Kock Island yards gave notice of unother fire in the southern part of the city, and soon an alarm came in from box 56, ' A lively run took the department to the corner of Kighth street und Twelfth avenne, where the large storuge warenouse of the Counctl Bluffs Fluol company was in flames. The building was erected and for- merly occupied by the Council Blufts Oil company, and_being saturated with oil, burned like tinder. ‘The fire was started on the inside, and was undoubtedly of incen- diary origin. Several times the firemen seemed to huve the firc under controi, when the flames would again blaze up with increased ferocily, and the building was gutted. There were 500 barrels of cement in the basement, which was almost entirely ruined. The building isa total loss, being beyond the possibiliy of repair. The com- vany liad just cxpended about #300 in re- pairs, putting on a new roof, ete. The total loss i noout #4.000, insurance 1,200, of which $500 is on stock and $700 on building. Auother fuct which serves to strengthen the incendin theory, 1s that the water was turned off from tho mains ‘Tuesday after- noon to make certain repairs, leaving the city without pressure, except from the reser- voir, and it was not' expected that direct pressure would be again put on uniil yester- duy. However. the work was completed late in the evenin ., and the pumping pres- surc turned on the'm :ins, 8o thut during all of the fires full fire pressure was main- tained. 1t i8 the gencral belief thut the fire- bugs knew 'hat th : water hub been shut off, and took advantage of it to secure a chance o plunder. the idea prevails tnat the smailer fires wore started to give the ince diaries u good opportunity to start more dis- astrous fircs 1n other parts of the city. The fircmen were kept busy, and did tbe bigaest night's work they have done for some time, During twenty-four hours there wore more alarms than durig the preceding two months, — - sarly Closing. Helmics, of Neola, for murder in the sccond degice, occasioned some littlo surprise among the friends of that gentleman, who fondly Loped that such would not be the case. It will e remem- bered thur Helmick killed Bd Palmer at Neola a short time ago. ‘The impression seemed to prevail that the jury, in view of the testimony introduced, would refuse to return an indictment, but that body preferred to let a full jury of tweive men pass upon the question of the defendant’s guilt or innocence, The court fixed Mr. Helmick’s bond at $5,000, which amount wus quickly putup by his friends, and he is still enjoying his liberty. ‘The defense asks for u specay trial, when it is hoped that a verdict of ucquittal’ will end the matter. The counsel for the defense ex plains the finding of the indictment by saying the members of the grand jury ure all strong anti-probibitionists, and that the defendant's work at Neola preju- diced them against him. He was en route to Davia City, Neb,, to go into the laundry business. He was discharged. It seeius that thero were five writs issued, amounting to about §21,000, The levees were made at the instance of Willlam A. Paxton, J. A, McShane, He n Kountze, Mr, Ril Mayune's former partner, and other Owaba capitalists, As stated in yesterday's Beg, the stallions seized, eight in number, in- cluding the great Osiris, the celebrated Saturn, sire of Cousul, McLeod, aud & num- ber of other noted flyers, were quartered at Bray's burn by the sherff, Late at night Mayne and eight bired men, with the horses' bridies, came over from Omaba, woved up to the barn through a back alloy and announced their intention of taking the horses. There were but two stable employes in the barn, but they objected to the plan, and Mayne began to abuse thein, One of them started for the telephone to call the police, when Mayne pulled a revolver, and shoving it under the man's nose, ordered him to drop the tele- phone. Under the circumstances, the man deemed it wise to obey. 'he other, however, siipped out the buck door, and visited the police station, where he found the chiaf of police, and stated the case, re- questing thav oMclal to go down and arrest Mayne, who was flourishing his gun and threatening to kill anyone who interfered with him, The chief said that e could not arrest the man withouta warrant, and finally told the man to go and get the sheriff, The complainaut replied that the sheriff was ont 1n the country levying on other property; still, the chief rofused to go witout a war- rant, and Mr, Bray was then called up to de- fend his property. This gentlemun was seen yosterduy, and was very indignant ovor the action of the chief of police, Said he: “If 1am not entitled to police protection, Lywant to know it. Ipay s much taxes as the averagecitizen, yet when o mau comes around my stable at midnight, flourishes a gun, and a messenger 18 sent for police assistance, the chief tells him to go and get a warranu or he cun not interfere, This, of course, implies that a justice must be hiunted up, gotten out of bed, and an in- formution filed. Mayne ought to have been arrested, and 1 have filed an informution against him, charging assault, and he will be arrested the ver, shows him- self on this side of the river.” The result of the row, however, showed thay Mr. Bray was amply able to take care of his property, for the tntrnders left with- out taking the horses with them. SOUTH OMAHA NIWs, A Rake With a Record. John Carey was born and reared in Lucas, Ta., und has as well-to-do and respectable pavents as a young man could desire. His conduct in the Magic City, on the contrary, has been as unsavory and eventful as the most abandoned can boast of. The festive John worked in the George H. Haomond & Co. packing houses during the day and sought out victims of his lust at night. He was not without attractive ap- pearance, and his art was effective, us he was zealous in pursuit of the forbidden fruit, Mr. Carey looked with the beuming eye of love on Miss Kittie Buckner, stepdaughter of Woodward. Hut this pretty and intelligent little girl was too wary to be caught by bis chaff. True, he nearly broke her heart, but her honor is her own. Carey laid siege to her affections and so far won them that they were eneaged to be married, ‘The day was set for Sunday before last. but the recreant man skipped out Saturday and has not been heard of since. To add to his infamous conduct, before leaving he gave it out that the girl was about to become a mother. Now comes out the bad part of his record. Last March a beautiful young girl of Whit- ing, Tu., & victim of Mr. Carey's wiles, came to this city and putup at the Benson hotel, Whilethereshe was delivered of a chiid whose father was Tohn Cary With the courage of a hero the wirl kept up, working every day, even getting breakfast for the boarders the morning after the child was born. Carey then took her to Omana and put up at one of the hotels as man and wife. At 10 o'clock at night the child was taken outon Twenty- ninth street and left on the doorstep at a doctor’s residence, and deserted by the in- famous and lecherous John, she returned that night to South Omaba. In aconversation with Mrs. Woodward she exprossed her delight that the recreant cur had left, and was only too giad that her daugnter would never marry him, Mr. Carey is of u fine and pros family, and has sisters residing in South Omaha, A Trans t House Episode, “Prof. Lau Lau and wife, Chicago.” was written last Saturday on the Transit House register by u prepossessing young man, ac- companied by a comely young woman, His baggage did not come with them and on the strength of its arriviog or the next train e got accommodutions at the hotel. I tried various remedies, and was freated by a number of physic ciaus, but received no benefit until 1 began to take Aver's Sarsaparilla. A fow bottles of this medicine cured e of this troublesome complaint and com- sletely restored my licalth,'—Jesse M. Bojrgs, Holman's Mills, N. C. “When Ayer's Sarsaparilla was rec- ommended to me for cataril, I was in- clined to doubt its efficacy. Having tried so many remedies, with little ben- ith that anything would cure me. T beeane emaciated from loss of appetite and impaired digestion. I biad nearly lost the sense of suell, and v system was badly derang abiout discouraged, when a friend urged me to try Ayer's Sarsaparilla, and Te- forred me to persons whom it liad cured of catarch. After faking half a dozen botties of this medicine, L ani convineed that_ the only sure way of treating this obstinate dixease is through the blood,” —Charles H.
