The Temperance Women—The Day in the Parks—The Val of Kane Township--Personal and General Notes, Another Chapter on the Oity Hall “Well, 1 guess not—no, I guess not.” It was not the inimitable Lew Dockstader who spoke, but W. H. Knepher, alderman-at- large, who was replying to Tne Bre's in- quiry as 0 whether the new city hall proj had not been cut off in the bloom of its youth, and was even now fliling a premature grave. “The project is atl right, and the new cit hall will also be all right before many months nave passed, or 1 don't know what L am talk- ing ubout. It's mighty lucky, though, that the council isn't working at it the way the papers do, or it would be many a long day before Council Bluffs would see a new city building. Whyt Simply because the papers don't hang 10 it. little while they have a spasm, and for several days we don't read about anything but city hall, then they get tired because they don't see the walls going up, and then tho mattes is apparently fcrgotten for a week or two. Well, perha)s that is the bettar way after all, for if it was kept con- tinually before the eyes of the public the ight et tired of it, and want it dropped v 10 vive them a rest, But that city ball 18 going o be built. We are now advertising for bids on locations, and the site question will be settied some time this month. Then, of course, we will have to find out what amount the city is willing to_pay for its new hall, and I suppose thut it will be the proper thing to hiave the question submitted at the regular fuli election, as that would save the expense of caliing a special election just to vote on the bond question. 1 don’t suppose that it could be called a bond election eithe us the money would have to be raised by a special levy, but the result wouid be the samo. I feel very sanguine as to what the result of such an election wouid be, for 1 believe that the citi- zens understand the situation perfectly and know thav our present accommodations are inadequate, und also kuow that it is throwing money away to make any additions to the present city building. After an elec- tion, would come the adoption of plans and letting of contracts. My opinion 18 that work will be_commenced on the new build- ing by next February, and [ sincerely hope that 1 will not_be disuppcinted. It is ‘pretty hard for a man who has any pride in his eity to have to point outthat wretched feed store on Bryant street when a_stranger in- quires for the city hall, and if there ever wasa case of excusable lying, it would be, under such conditions, for the party ad- dressed to set up the cl: t he was also a stranger, and did not know the iocation of the city hall. Aside from the disgrace at- tachingz to the city through that portion of its public prope there nre many argu- ments that mi; be advadeed, but there 1s one which alone should be sufficient. The regular Sabbath afternoon meeting of the Christian Scieatists wus held in the rooms of the Western Iowa Busiress col- lege at 4 o'clock yesterday afternoon, A lit- tle knot of Christian Scientists meet here with unvarying regularity at that hour every Sunday and hold devotional exercises, and not, as popularty suppased, to discuss their peculiar views upon the laws of health, The excessive heat yesterday perhaps made the at‘endance lighter than usual. Only about twenty-five were present, und those mostly ladies. But small as the number was, there were worstippers from Des Moines and es the regular attendants from Council Bluffs, The services were opencd by prayer and singing and then J. P, Filbert, of this city, delivered a vory earnest and thoughtful discou from the text found in First Tioiothy, ii **I'he church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the trath." he commentators’ definition of what the church implied us now constructed given as the aggregation of christian influence. ihe stricter ecclesiastical term, the church militant of Christ on earth, primarily 1mplics a warfare, that «which resists it, be it what it may. This judgment is said to be ianl, The de- rivation of the term church militant indi- cates an organization of a military churacter, und the whole history of the church sustains it. But the prophecy of Christ concerning the stone which the builders had rejected applies to the christian churches to-day as clearly and strongly as it did centuries ago. Christ is the ground and pillar of truth, and His commana was to resist not evil but to overcome it with truth; and yet throughout all ages the church bas been a military or- ganization aguinst ali sin, rejectiog Christ's charity as its corner stone. Hence the earth hus mouraed, and because of that rejection has come sorrow, sickuess and distress. We, us christian scientists, claim the church and state arc not divorced, never have been and never can be divorced. - Every law man- kind has placed upon record hus been in conformity with the church's deadly enmity towards sin, Every law from Moses down to Blackstone has been a punishwent, thereby leaving out Christ, ~ State, law and medicive can never be scparated. The church militant is & material re- ligion dnd requires a materia medica, with Cbrist the material. Mind was the only healer. His theology, medicine and law were one—charity, ‘Lue true church is the church of the living God—the church triumphaut, uot militant. Whatever makes @ new man, whatever casts out devils, heals the sick, is the true church, The cluy that Christ mixed with His spittle and annointed the eves of the blind man had no virtue in itself, but the divine will and mind of the Master wrought the miracle. ‘This divine will aud mind Christ gave to His followers and to His church, and when it is rejected the pillar and the ground of truth is re- jected. The services closed by singing the doxol- ogy and pronouncing the beuediction. "I'be discourse was listened w with a great deal of interest. From figures submitted by County Auditor Hondrioks it is learned that the assessed vialuation of Kane township for 1880 is 6,206,437, an increase of §1,475.858 over that of last year's, and that of the ovunty outside of Kaue wwnship is $7,57,510, s iucrease of 1013 Broadway, Tine jewelry, cleaning und repairin $70,142 over last year. This makes the total assossed valuation of the county $14,085,- 047, or an increase of $1,546,005 over that of 1888, 1t will be scen that while the as- sessod valuation of the county is thus largely increased, the increase comes from Kane townshin with the small exception of £1,642. As the assessed valuation of the city of Council Bluffs 15 $6,123,448, leaving thit of the remainder of Kane township but 159, it will bo seen that the increase in essed valuation of Pottawattamie most entirely from this city, nothor proof of the growth of Council Bluffs during the past year, and shows tnat_the rest of the county will have to got on a lively hustle or be left far be- hind.
