The recommendation of the chief of police that Detective Mostyn be apponted captain of the police force to fill the vacancy caused by the retirement of Duff Green, does not prevent other members of the force from making a scramble for the position and for other places that a promotion of one of the present ofticers will make vacant. Detective Mostyn feels that he is. entitled to the promotion. Sergeants H. P. Haze and Michael Whalen are also aspirants for the position and both have influentinl friends who are urging their claims, Haza was recommended for chief detective by the chief of police, but is not averse to tak- ing higher game, } Considerable foeling has been stirred up by somo of the other recommendations. Tom Ormsby, who has been one of tho best workers on the force und a long while in the service, is recommonded for the position of fourth sergeant. His friends on and outside of the forco feel that he should have been made chief of detectives, Mr. Mostyn’s place, being the oldest special on the force.
