The only change which affects Omaha is in the leaving time ot No. 1, which will leave at 7:45 p. m. instead of 8:15 as at present. The changes in time of other traing are very unimportant and are not worth mentioning, the difference in time not being over four or five minu To Climb Pike's Penk. Captain W. F. Minnie Collins, a decidedly handsome girl, was before Judge Berka on the charge of being an inmate of a house of prostitution. Ste was found 10 & house at the corner of Eighth and Dodge streets, Weanesday night. ‘The girl told her story to the court, She is an orphan, she said, sixteen years old, and, with anolder sister, has been living with her grandmother at Hambury, Towa. Soma time ago her older sister loft home and Omaha, and soon after wrote to h burg relatives that she was married and do- ing well, and wanted Minnie to come and ve with her. Three weeks ago Min- nie and her grandmother quarrelled, and the girl, remembering her sister’s invitation, left her graudmother and came to Omaha to sec her sister. When she arrived here she was astonished and_shocked to find that her sister Mary, mstead of being marrie living in a_house of prostitution on street. ' Minnio was without money and without frienas other thun her sister, and after other plans failed she went into the house as an inmabe, She was assessed the regular prostitute’s fine, which her sister paid, Repeated in HELFENST OUl'!f CLAIMS, The Munificent Figure at Which he 15 Seliing Them. 0. Backus, oneof the Omaha parties fight- ng tne claims of Helfenstein, the St. Louis millionaire, upon North Omaha real estate, gave up the battle wednesday, and bought a quit claim deed from Helfenstein. The property in question was the north one-half of tax lot 22, section 15, township 15, range 13. Itison North Sherman avenue, Hel- fenstein got $600 for his claim, Backus wanted to get alittle rea The banks wouldn’t take a mortg: lot while the title was clouded by Helfen- stein’s claim. 1t has been so for years, and 10 one can yot see through to the end; o he gave it up to secure a certainty. Tn regard to the above case the attorneys for the Home Defenders, the owners of this property, said Mr. Backus had a number of ns upon his houses, and in order to relieve nself from these ho endeavored to secure a loan before the Home De- fenders’ orgavization had been formed and had gone so far that he could not withdraw. In order to protect himself Mr, Backus was compelled to complete the loan, and in order to do so had to purchase a quit claim from Helfenstein, as the easgern loan agents will not loan money upon any property involved in a law suit. ‘‘But let me suow you,” said one of the at- torneys, ‘‘how highly Mr. Helfenstein val- ues his claims upon this property. Two rep- utable real estate men have estimated it to be worth $26,500, and in addition to this Hel- fenstein claimed $4,000 for rent, but he gives 8 quit claim deed to all for o paltry $600. I tell you that 1t is nothing but a clever. tem of robbery and so appears upon the face.” RIVAL GRAV DIGGERS, Two Veterans, Medlock and Pruitt, Eager to Do Sod-Turning. Some weeks ago, Rufus Pruitt, sexton of Prospect Hill cemetery, resigned his position to accept that of sexton of Mount Hope ceme- tery, situated in the northwestern part of the city. He was succeeded by the great, veucrable, imperturbable prince of grave- diggers in this city, George Medlock, In returning to Prospect Hill, George found himself on s old svading ground, be- cause, there, he had tearfully laid away nearly all the sieepers who rest forever from the cures of life Rufus Pruitt’s father, however, thought he he had a right to his son's vacated position, He circulated a petition asking for the vlace, but was told by the board that he was too late. George had anticipated. He then ob- tained the permission of a number of lot owners 1o keep their premises in good condi- tion. Finally, one day, death sent a body to be buried in one of these lots. Mr. Pruitt's shovels and spade dug the grave and before those of Mr, Medlock’s could be got to work and then the scowling took place, It was the frowning of veterans vivitied by thoughts which took root deeper than the grave. The presence of the dead, however, prevented a disturbance of the peace which always reigns in their midst. But it 18 understood that Mr. Medlock says that if Mr., Pruitt wants to continue his grave digging with hope of re- muneration, he will not turn a finger to deny him the pleasure the task may occasion him, Something 1o Remember. SEL1ZER-SOARED COON, His Frantic Effort to Bscape an Im- aginary Knemy. “Great gawd, dat nigger'll sure!” Henry Cruse, the roustabout in the Mur- ray hotel saloon, was flying down the alley between Fourteenth and Fifteenth and Har- ney and Farnam streets, when he forth this ejaculation. Henry was scared. Thore was no douht about it. Bareheaded and with his white apron fluttering in the wind, he flew up that alley at a paco that would put Little Brown Jug to the blush. He was so seared that his ebony-haed countenance had turned to a sul- phurous yellow. Atthe end of the alley he ran arms of a policeman, “Oh, good Gawd! Mr. OMsser,” cried Henry, while big drops of perspiration rollod down his face, “dar's a nigger down dar at the Murray who's tryin’ to kill me. Ho shot at me foah times, Mr. OMsser. He ben tryin’ to kill me for fouh woeks, Oh, Lawd! what'll L do!” With much dificulty Henry was persuaded to roturn to the hotel with the officer.
