Corbett, Casper, Wyoming, HELD FOR LAROCENY, An lowa Youth Accused of Stealing a Saloonkeeper's Roll. Berton Love, a verdant looking youth from lowa, was arrested yesterday charged with grand larceny. The complaining wit- nesses aro Graves & Miller, who keep a saloon near the fair grounds, They state that Love has been boarding at their place for the last three woeks. - Last night about 9 o'clock he came to the house and went up to his room. About half an hour afterwards some one was heard in the lower part of the house. The landlady went to the door to see who it was, and saw Love just leaving the house with his satchel. As soon as Love saw her he started and ran _until he was out of sight. Mr, Miller, one of the proprietors of the saloon, had hidden a roll containing £105 under the bur on Saturday night, and his suspicions were aroused by the man's strange actions, He at once went to see if his hidden treasure was safe, but, like old Mother Hubbard, ‘‘when he got thers the cupboard was bare.” He sallied forth to the police court yesterday morning and filed an information against Love Love stated yesterday that he went to the house Sunday night to get his clothes, as he was going to change boarding houses, He has been working at Swift's ice house for about a week and concluded to move further down town. He remained at the house about half an hour and then left. He says he knows nothing about the money, but only went after his clothes and took nothing else. After leaving the house he started down town, but being weary he went into an un- finished house and slept there all night. The case is set for hearing next Monday at 10 a, m. AMONG THE RAILROADS. The O. B, & N.'s Back Down and How It Came About—Notoes, General Manager Burt, Assistant Freight Agent Cassidy, of the Elkhorn. General Freght Agent Milier of the B. & M. and Division Agent Warrack, of the Union Pa- citio, left yesterdny for Chicago, whera they will attend a meeting of the Trans-Missouri Freight association to-day. At this meeting the Chicugo, Burlington & Northern will formally announce a with- drawal of the recent 75 per cent cut in rates, The recent decision of Judge Cooley, of the inter-State Commerce commission is what prompted this action. A well known rail- road offcial, w.o was in attendance at the meeting in Chicugo when the Burling- ton announced the cut and the St. Paul & Kansas City gave it out that they would mect it says: ““We, of the Missouri river lines were sick ut'heart b e when the St. Puul & Kansas City made their declaration we saw nothing but ruin staring us in the face. We did not want to cut rates. Chairman Faith- orn pondered a few moments and remacked, ‘Gentlemen, I think your action 1s illegal. 1 will consult'Judge Cooley. ‘‘He retired und in five minutes returned with the judge's decision. It came like a thunderbolt and fairly paralyzed the people who wanted to cut the rates. They sat still for ubout u minute und finally one moved to adjourn, The motion was carried.” *'The reason that prompted the Burlington orthern to cut rates is appavent. Lhe @ lines aud the Canadian Pacific are ruin- ing its business which is all through trafiic. he eastern hnes send by rail to Buffalo and thence by water. In consequeuce the Burl- ington from Chicago to St. Paul is shut out. All merchandise goes, to Duluth. Notwith- standing that the eastern lines once declared to pro rate, the Chicago, Burlington & Northern now has agents in the eust_trying to make such an arrasgement. But it wou't work. The eastern roads and the Canadian Pacificare hauling freight fora song, and the Burlington & Northern with no intermediate trafic is in o bad fix. The road has played the part of the cat to the St. Paul & Om monkey and got its fingers burned, and what they can or will do 18 a probiem. I think they will be forced out of business, They are trying to make an arrangement with the Milwaukee & St. Paul, but that road is now going back on them.' Cooley is watching them closeiy and all the_little schemes they put up will be frustrated. At the meeting to-morrow they will withdraw their rate and again fight agamst a rumous disastrous competition.” They Cut the Rate. The passenger department of the Union Pacific is in a peck of trouble over G A. R. rates to Viilwaukee, The rate from Denver was fixed at $32.05 but the Union Pacific sold at §82.15, a cut of 50 ceuts. In consequence the other roads are and are contending that the Union Pacific for each ticket 80 soid must forfeit $100 to the ‘‘gentlemen’s agreement” association. The Union Pacific, however, sets up the claim that the first rate advertis .15 and that under the law they could not rais the price without ten days' notice, hence their action, The matter will be laid before the interstate association for adjustication. road Notes.
