County Treasurer Bolln has not abandoned his purpose of having slight reductions wade in the tax levy. He talked with some of the commissioners yosterday, and from them received reasonable assurauce that they will do whut they can towards making & reduction which will bring the total per cont down to 19 4-5 mills, or 1-5 mill lower than last year's assessment. This could be done by throwing out entirely the 1 mill levy for buying & new Joor farm and reducing the state insane fund $1,000. Such uction Mr, Bolln claims would not only date his office force in the matter of frac- tional mathematics, but benefi everybody. At present the fixed per cent of 20 50-70 means #n immense amount of tedious, as well as oua.bersome work, while 18 4:5 “would be comparatively easy figares to handle. es- Emmn_y the 4-5. Secretary McShane and As- sistant Secretary Gibbs have with a number of assistants been devoting their entire and exclusive attention to the work for weoks and everything 1s now in good shape for the coming event. This week a large corps of men are billing the state. As President Mount stated yester- day, "“Every mook and crook in Ne- braska, as well as Towa and Kansas, will be covered with advertising matter, showing our list of attractions for the fair, exposition and other events.” The unusuaily large number of attractions must certainly draw a great number of peo- vle to Omaha and Council Bluffs during the week, but _the two cities can, it is claimed, comfortably accommodate all visitors, A book will be opened at the fair headquarters fo n few days whore the names of all per- sons able to or desirous of furnishing rooms for strangers will be enrolled, with the price, etc., etc. In this way the manage- ment hopes to be able to furnish visitors with desirable temporary homes in either one city or the other, as preferred. The cheap fare to Council Bluffs makes that as desirable a place for people who have friends in that city to visit as is Omaha, and between the two_cities, Assistant Secretary Gibbs thinks that 40,000 people can be comfortably accommodated. The business men’s display at the Coli- sewn will not, it is clmumed, detract from the fair proper if the men will furnish the usual display for the latter. The managers of the fair anticipate as hiberal displays as hereto- fore despite merchants’' week. This it 18 claimed is nothing more than right as thesladies are working with one common end in view, una that is a general success. Y. will cost little money and little time for any manufacturer to make two displays in- stead of one while the benefits will be two- fold. It is expected thut every man who makes a display at the Coliseum will make one out at the fair grounds. Yesterday matter advertising Rev. Dr. Tal- mage's visit and lecture was circulated ‘Chis ought to be a drawing card for one day of the week, at least, us Mr. Talmage is one of the best-known and most popular divines alive to-day. His lecture on the “Sunny Side of Lafe' 18 one of the best he delivers, and the lecture of this gentleman alone will repay a visit to the city during the fair, Do yousuffer from scrofula, salt rheum, or other humors? Dr. Mercer asked for the right to use North ‘I'nirty-third street from Burt to Lake for laying a motor line. Permission was granted provided the motor cars are in opera- tion in ninety days. If this 1s not done the franchise will be lost. On motion of Mr. Kierstead all property owners 1n block 51 were notified to abate all water closets that are nuisances, aud the owner of property on lot 3, of the szme block, was particularly requested to abate the nui- sance on his premises. ———— A $10,000 MORTGAGE, D. W. Saxe Mortgages His Entire Stock. Another and entirely new chapter has been added to the lu.e anonymous letter sen- sation 1n the shape of a $10,000 mortgage given by D. W. Suxe to his father, Robert, wh was filed with the county clerk yesterday. This document covers his store fixtures and stock of drugs, in Boyd’s opera house block: also two promissory notes, one for $1,834, made November 19, 1887, and the other for 262550, made September 11, 1858, and each drawing interest at the rate of eight per cent. It is stated in the mortzage that Robert J. Saxe became endorser for D. W, on a ninety day note for £5,000 at the Omaha National bank, therefore thus secures himself. “Ihere is no foundation,” said Mr. Saxe, sr., “*for the report of a failure, because there has been no failure, I have taken charge of the business and will continue it.
