A rumor that eastern capitalists have been trying to get hold of the Omaha White Lead works and taki om jnto the trust is veri- fied by Mr, Henry W. Yates, but he says that Levi Carter, who is nearly sole owner of the concern, will not sell for less than $1,000,000. Since the trust was organized it secems that these works have become more prosperous and have a brighter fature than they ever had. A new process in which the company has & patent for manufacturing the Jead and which 18 said tobe much better than the old, is being used and dealers are buying its vmduul in preference to the other manu. factures. This is the reason the trust de. sires, it is said, to crush the concern out of existence. The works are being enlarged and their capaoity incrensed trom 2,000 to 5,000 tons a ear, Uptothe present time they have not con remunerative, and the company claims to have sunk £15),000 in themn. But fortune has at last "hunged and the pros- pects now are very bright. Mr, Yates sold most of his stock six months ugo, for which he1s sorry, but still retains enough 1o make him a director and the treasurer of the company. ————— Our readers have doubtless often no- ticed that Hood's Sarsaparillais well spoken of in the newspapers. The ress is quick to recognize merit, and goou not hesitate to give praise where it is due. The following is from the Baptist Weekly, a leading religious pa- ers “Advertising moay bring an article prominently before the public, but no advertising can long help it if it has Hgood’u ‘Smnn[mnllu is woll advertised; but the best proof of its value is that 80 many persons use it on the recommendation of friends who have proved its peculiar virtues.” AN UNRELIABLE REPORT. South Omaha Packers Not Trying to Oontrol the Stovk Yards, A morning paper contains a paragraph to the effect that the managers of the various South Omaha packing houses are combining to obtaln control of the stock yards, and gives as a reason that G. E. Swift, the senior partner in the firm of Swift & Co., is in the ity and will not divulge any of the business transacted at a meoting of his managers and himself. John A, McShane, president of the stock yards company, was_seen this morning and Tor the sacond time denounced the rumor as absolutely untrue and ridicuiously absurd. None of the packing house owners have ever evinced the slightest desire to obtain control of the yards, The visit of Mr, Swift has no significance beyond an_investigation of his own private affairs, and is one of the half dozen that he makes to this city each year. Mrs. £. Slattery, of Delhi, La., says her son, 14 years of age,had a drendful time with ulwru sores and blotches which followed chicken pox. After using many remedies without benefit, she gave him Swift's Spe- cific, which cured him sound aund well. IR To be Given Away. The county commissioners have found a big stumbling block in the matter of selecting names from which to' draw district jurors under the new law. “Unless some interpretation can be given the act warranting the violation of other and counter statutory provisions, s Commis- sioner O'Keeffe, “'it will be unlawful for us to select our mry by the wheocl-of-fortune plan before next January. “In making and passing this law the legis- lature either through ignorance or an over- sight forgot to repeal the law relative to poll- books and ballot boxes. As the matter now,” he continued, ‘‘we no ' right to open one and handle the other, except in a contested election or for the use of the courts. After election returns have been made and the vote has been canvassed, poll-books must be sealed and not opened within the period of one year, only for the purposes I have named. If that is true we have no right to take them out, and, without the poll-books, it i8*impossible for us to get a 1ist compris- ing one-tenth of the voters of Douglas county, as required, from which to select forty-elght or sixty jurors for the September term of court.” It is understood that County Attorney Mahoney has been asked to give the board an official opinion, and until that has been done matters remain at a stand still, POWDER Absolutely Pure, ‘This powder nevor varies.
