For some time past the teachers of the pub- licschools have been pad on special checks of Secretary Piper, which they had cashed at one of the banks of the oity. The funds for this purpose were obtained from the treasurer on @ warrant drawn for the full amount. They were then deposited in the bank in the name of the secretary and remained until checked out as above indi- cated. ~ This mode of paying employes of the board has obtained for yeurs, and was con- sidered to most convenient to all concerned, especially the lady teachors. The latter will seriously objoct to the new ordor of things. The council, comptroller and city treasurer, aftor having discussed the matter, have noti* fled the board of cducation that, hereafter, & warrant must be drawn for each individ- ual teacher or janitor to whom the board is indebted, This, of course, will give the treasurer more work, but it will bo in_accordance with the law. Dropped Dead. Will Bohanan, a young photographer at George Heyn's gallery, fell dead at 1:30 o'clock yesterday, from apoplexy of the heart. Ho was 17 years old, and lLved with his mother at §20 South Seventeenth street. She is a very weakly woman, and her physician stated that the knowledge of her son’s death must have & serious effect upon her. The sudden death of Bohanan excited little surprisc wmong his mnost intimate friends. Six or seven years ago he over- exerted himself while lifting heavy urticles, and has since shown all the premonitory symptoms of heart disense. Several times he has fallen helpless to the sidewalk, and the last was but a repetition of former at- tacks, with a fatal result. The funeral will be held from the famiiy residence at 820 South Seventeenth street this afternoon at 3 o'clock. 'The deceased was at work when stricken down, having left home only about an_hour previous, appareutly ts well as usual. He was a young man, barely twenuy- two, of unusually fine spirit, a thorough zen- tleman, ana beloved by all who knew him. For over five years he had been employed by Mr. Heyn, who regarded him almost us a son, Of the family only the mother and a livtle brother remain, the father having died some years since. Clara Burchard was the central figure in police court. Clara was arrosted at the ic- stance of her father on the charge of being incorrigible, Her father, Ephriam H. Burchard, stated that bo had boen deserted by his wife in Glenwood, Ia., seven years ago and left in charge of throe children. He came to Omaha, found employment in the smolting works and, for tho past two years, had been living in the old Brownell hall on South Sixteenth street. Clara, the oldest of Burchard’s three children, has been keeping house for her fathar. Of late, however, she has refused to stay at home 'and has been vatronizing beer-hall dances with disreputable companions. Her father has made_numerous but unavailing efforts to in- uce the girl to mend ber wavs. He claims that the girl's mother, who is in the city, leading a life of shame, has encouraged the girl in her downward career and has kept her from returning home. The girl was found at Metz hall by her father Wednesday night and when she refused to go home with him he caused her arrest and attempted in police court to have her sent to to the reform school. As tho girl is more than sixteen years of age, the authorities could do nothing in the case. She was dismissed.
