SCHNUR' The Matter Privately Considered by the Church Directors. The little church at the corner of Twenty- first and Burdette streets presided over by Rev Schour, was not overcrowded last night atthe regulur evening services, In fact, there was plenty of room for many more. The pastor unnounced the subject of his ser- mon as “‘Heuvenly Joy,” and took for his text the seventeenth verse of the fifteentn <chapter of St. Luke. It was painfully evi- dent that he was laboriug under great ex- citement. He was nervous and £dgety and often hesitated and repeated his words. No reference was mede in his remarks to the situation in which he has become involved. He laid particular stress upon the portion of his text, *“There is more rejoicing in heaven over the one sinuer who repents,” and stated that many things which appear. great here are regarded as insignificant in heaven, and things which appear insignificant here are noticed in heaven. He also advanced the theory thut churucter without love is dead, and stuted that *'If we are to be worth any- thing in that final life we must see that we are consistent, earnest and doing right. Then only wili the church und religion succeed. Let us 5o live that saints will rejoice over our actions,” Mr, Z. B. Berlin, one of the board of directors of the church, was seen after the services and asked what teuth there was in the report that Mr. Schnur had been asked to resien. Ho stated rather that the matter had been considered pri- vately by the airectors, but no official nction had been taken on it. 'Oune of the members had given the winister warning of the im- pending action, On being vressed for the renson for this action by the directors, he admitted thut it was on account of the objec- tion to the g lady he had chosen as the vartner of bis foys and sorrows, He could give no definito 7bjection, but_stated that it was on social grounds—that the young ludy did not suit the notions of some of the con- gregation, ete. He stated also that Mr. Behnur hid sent his resignation of the pas- torate of this church 1o the board of missions about three months ago. Bixhop Newman's Sermon at the First Methodist Church Bishop Newman preached to a very large congregation at the First Methodist church yesterday morning. His sermon, devoted to tho science of Clristianity, was profoundly interesting, aud one of the most elegant ever heard in Omaha. In substance, he main- tained that from the beginning all great events for good, all wonderful discoveries, all revolutions are thie result of God's su- pernatural power worked through a few men and women. Johu C. Calhoun did more than any other wau. be suid, to bring about the late civil war_and leave our gencration a fragment. At the beginniug of that trouble 1t appeared for o time that this nation was ready to crumble and fall, and the loyal people, in their fear and agouy, cried out for a_leader, God heard their | rs und was secretly at work. Away off inthe west, on & broad sweep of prairie, ie discovered the man, and the republic lives because Abraham Lincoln was consecrated to the cause of the Al- mighty. For centuries the thunders kept suying, *'I have in mo a spirit that will make the world & whispering gallery,” but not until a Chris- tian Morse came and heard the spirit was its voice heeded. He raises his agents from obscurity to position and power After the sermon a collection was taken towards making up a deficiency of about £1,000 in the church’s current expense debt for this year. SCLEN Bouthern llliteracy. The services of the South Tenth Streot M. £. church yesterday morning were devoted to the cause of the Freodmen's Aid and Southern Educational canses. The exercises consisted of r2sponsive readings by the pas- tor and_congregation on the iliteracy of people in the south, and this was followed by a short impromptu address by the minis- ter, Rev. Dawson. Among some figures quoted in the readings were the following: There are 1,500,000 voters in the south who can not read or write, There are nearly four hundred thousand young women between the ages of fifteen and_ twenty who cun not read or write, and _there are nearly 2,000,000 women over the age of twenty-one who are cqually ignorant, The Freedmen’s Aid und SouthernEducation society, which is trying to decrease, this illiteracy, estublished thirty-eight institutions of learning last yeur in the south; twenty-turee of these were for colored peopic and fifteen for whites, Over 7,000 students attended these schools, 5,000 being colored and 2,000 white. Over 400 of these were preparing for the minisiry and 2,500 expected 1o be teachers. ‘The pastor’s uddress was simply in corrob- oration of the above figures, and consisted mainly of incidents descriptive of the illiter- ucy and poverty of the poor whites of the south, Do you suffer from scrofula, salt rheum, or other humors?
