In county office circles the political pot has commenced to boil very lively. Cou- missioner Mount stirred it by declaring that Mike Roche, the county clerk, would have 1o be thrown overboard. Roche says Mount ought to attend strictly to his own canvass if he wants to be re- elected, and Dick O'Keeffe intimates that any attempt to knife Roche may react on the parties who make it. There is no longer any question but that a combination b been formed to freeze the county clerk out, and his friends are furious over it. They have prepared themselves, it is said. and when the proper time comes will make somo very interesting exposures. As an illustration of Chalrman Mount's cunning, the fact is pointed out that he hi proposed that the money appropriated to Mr. Roche for hiring six clerks ou the tax list work be divided accordiug to the political in- fluence of smd clerks. The resolution au thorizing Roche to employ them says that they shall reccive §75 a month each, but Mount 1 not satisfied with this and proposes av_entirely different distribution, Ho said to O'Kecffo yesterday that some of the clerks ought to have £100 A month and othors only $0; and, in order to have the distribution made according to his idea, he provosed that Roche draw the money and pay them instead of making out individual warrants. George Anthes and J.R. Bean are the clerks whom he wants to pay $100 each, on the grouna _that they are expert uccount: ants, O'Keeffe objects to the scheme, and will make a fight, aguinst it. Another feature causing much cotment 18 the apparent collusion between Mount, An derson and County Attorney Mahoney. Nearly every question raised in the board ~ meetings is referred to Maboney, with _instructions to make an examination and give his opinion thercon. One gentleman ventured the asser tion that it was not i the line of a county attorney’s duty to act as un examining cou mittee and uscertain whether or not the clerk is using too many or too few books of record, **but,” he continued, “this seems to be a part of the vlau adopied to manufucture charges against Roche, and tous prevent him gomg before the convention for a re- nomination.” The Roche faction declare that Ben Kmight of the Ninth ward will be u candidate agaiust Mount, and Mike Laley says re is not a man i the district who can defeat him, A Relinoie nady.
