Has thp Union Pucific a Trafo Ar rangement With the Alton? Vice President Holcomb, of the Union Pacific, has gono to Chicago, where ho will attend amooting of the railway presidents to-day. Charles F. Adams, president of the Unlon Paciflo system, will moet him him at that point. It fs reported that the Union Pacifle will withdraw from the presi- dents' organization, Genoral Managor Kimball said he knew nothing of the reported withdrawal, and was of the opwion that the company had no thought of downg anything of vhe kiad. It is reported, however, that the Union Pacifie will be taken to task for its tie-up with the Chicago & Alton in making & roduced rate between Chicago and Denver. Although the ofcials ofthe Union Pagcific deny that a trafilc ar- rangement has boen made betwoen their road and the Alton, it was learned from a re- lidble source that, in connection with the meeting of the rallrond presidents, Vice Pres- ident Holeomb had made arrangements to meet tho Alton officials and arratgo for the running of solid Alton trains over the Union Pacific from Kunsas City to Denver, thereby aking a new Chicago-Denver route. In wnection with this the individual referred aid: ““There is no doubt in my mind but that the Union Pacific and the Alton ed up, and innsmuch as the Alton idrawn from the interstate rail- pization the Union Pacific will likewise. The statement tnat the Union Pa- cific recognized the Alton rate, thereby making a $20 rate between Denver and Chi- cago, because the inter: te commerce com- mission ruled that way, is all bosh. Tno Alton has made 1o rate 'from Kansas City of . It said that it would accept that por- the through rate. Had 1t made tho ute from Kansas City the Union Pacifio would have been justified in muking the $36 rate from I is plainly demonstrates that the Union Pacific and the Alton are tied up.” The Burlingt ta thoe Cat. The oficials of the Burlington admitted thut the report published in Tne Bre of Saturday to tho effect that the Burling- ton had decided to make a §26 rate between Denver and Chicago via Omaha, was, and is correct. An attache of the passenger Jde- partment said: “We have also given notico of a rate of $2.85 between Denver aud St. Louis.” 'This is a reduction in the St. Louis rates from $2 It was also learned that tho Towa lines announced therr willing- ne of the through rate be- and Chicago which will make on_ ull roads communi- cating with Omaha. The ofiicials of the Union Pacific stated that while they had received no notice of the $1.85 rate from the connecting lLines at the uffs that the same was forthcoming and that the sam would be made via Kausas City vi a §26 rato Ticket Agents to Organize. What He Had to do With the South Omaha Syndicate. ‘The Anderson-South Omaha Land company case wiil probably consume Judge Walkeley's attention all this week. William A. Paxton was put on the stand, and kept thero two or three hours. He testified that, at a confer- ence bad with A. H, Swan, when they were talking of forming the syndicate, the latter said Anderson was interested with him. At an's request, the witness and Anderson signed a note of $15,000 at the First National banlk so that he (Anderson) could lift & debt from some of the land which had to be paid before corporation bonds could be issued. That was the only time witness ever heard that Aaderson was, in any wav interested with Swan, The witness at- tended the meeting at which the bonds were signed and given Swan to take east and sell. The meeting was held in J. M. Woolworth's office. Much figuring was indulged in to find out just how much money each one would receive as his proportion from the proceeds of ths sale of the bonds, Judge Hopewell's action_in appointing an attorney to defend Lena Marsh, r of the fact that she was being repre by two young lawyers, has _attracte tention of some members of the bar. The judge says he consulted Miss Marsh and, finding that she was not only ignorant but had no knowledge of the men applying for her release on bail, concluded that she would be more satisfactorily defended if he should appoint an attorney to take charge of her case. The other attorneys were em- ployed by Ellersick. Complaint was lodged against the latter. and the court holds that it miy be necessury to convict him in order to clear her. This could best be sccomplished, if required, by an attorney to defend her who strall not be in Ellersick's employ. Dell R. Edwards has commenced suit against Johu A. Longren, Eilen Longren et al, to recover principal and nterest on & note for §210 made October 1, 188¢, by Lon- gron und delivered 1o Cuaries Corboll. Later the plaintiff purchased the note from Cor- bett. She alleges that, in October, Longren and wife executed to Corbett a mortgage on certain real estate as security for payment of tho obligation, Plaintiff also purchased this mortgage. Another defendact, Andrew Johnson, claims to have an interest in the real estato. She further sets forth that the Bee Publishing company, which is also made a defendant, holds an interest by reason of a judgment lien. An accounting and settle- ment by the court is prayed for. Iosa Andreeson has filed a reply to Ed Maurer’s answer of her petition, bringing suit against him for damages, in which she wakes a general denial of everything he sets up. The case will not be tried uutil vext term of court, Judge Doane heard arguments on the motion for a new trial yesterday in the case of Frederika Jenson against the city of Omaba.
