Important Real Estate Deal, An important real estate deal was made yesterday by George Metealf and J. R. Rice, by which they became the owners of the old Tarvox property, located on the road leading to the deat and dumb institute. This is one of the finest tracts of suburban property in Counal Bluffs, It comprises twenty acres, covered with nursery stock and ornamental trees. Counnected with the deal are some important projects for that portion of the aity. It is well known that the two gentle- men are largely mterested in the proposed new clectric motor line to connect the two cities via the Union Pacitic bridge, and the line runs through this tract. It is not in- tended to plat it into small lots, but it is to be used for su- burban residences, and the probabilities are that within a very short time some of the finest homes in Council Bluffs will be built there, chiefly by Omaha pcople. The tract is grandly located, looking upon one of the fiaest panoramas in the cil It s bounded on the north by Woodbury avenue, on the south by fwenty-ninth avenue, and South avenue passes through it. This pur- chase 1s looked upon as conclusive evidence that the second electric motor line crossing the river is ussured, und it is proposed to do for the southern portion of the city what the vresent motor line has done for the western. Water in Great Demand, About 7 o'clock last evening the fire de- partment was again called out to extinguish a fire ut a couple of barns owned by Saunuel Blackman and occupied by J. W. Kelley on Upper Broadw: The building was fired by some children who were playing there. Blackmau's barn was completely destroyed, but two horses which were inside were saved. Kelley had a buggy ana two sets of hurness destroyed. This fire again demonstrated the fact that the mams in the su- burbs are cither too small or clogged up. ‘The pressure secured was altogetlier muade- quate and ulmost uscless, Water could not be thrown ten feet, and it was twenty min- utes by the watch after additional pressure was called for, before a perceptible increase was noticed. The recent fires in the outskirts present strong arguments in favor of returning the steamers to active service, and_ placing the clephantine truck on the retired list. Yes- terday’s pressure was strong enough to burst the mains on Peari street and Fifth avenue, still the fire protection in the suburbs was altogether inadequate. ‘The matter gulls for a thorough investiga- tion at once, and certain changes should bo devised to insure the protection for which annual taxes are levied. The fire depart- ment claims that the waterworks company is to blame, and the latter insists that the fire depurtment should use something smaller than a 13¢-inch nozzle on a 4-inch main. A careful examination and investigation is veeded, and the council snould attend to it at once. —-— C. B. Trunk Factory moved to Chapman’s old stund.
