THE YOKE OF SELF-DENIAL, Dr. Detwiler’s Address to the High School Graduates. THE ESSENTIALS TO SUCCESS. gound Advice to Those About to Enter Upon the More Prac- tical Dutics of day Life, Dr. Detwiler's Discourse. Rev. D, 8. Detwiler delivered the bacea {aureate sermon at Kountza Memorial church, yesterday morning, before the mem bers of the ;high school class of 1880, and a Jarge congregation composed for the greater pire of the parents aud friends of the students, % The church chancel and the pulpit were beautifully and lavishly decorated with flow- ers of many varictics. Below the choir gal lery was the national shield, bearing the word " Welcome,” and ucross thoe gallery was suspended the cluss motto: “Vineit Qui; Se Vincit.”” After the Te Deum Dr, Detwiler oftered rayer, in which he especially implored the Hivine blessing for the members of the cluss, their parents and teachers, the school super- intendent and the board of education. and returned thanks to God that He had seen fit to spare the lives of the members of this class. In beginning his address Dr. Detwiler bade the class and their assembled friends hearty welcome, and said he hoped that they would assemble there 1 worship often. For his text he took the twenty-seventh yerse of the third chapter of Lamentations: 1t i good for man (o fear the yoke in his outh.” The word man, he said, was used ere in its generic scnse. and applied with the sawe force to the young ladies of the class 88 it did to the young men. The words were spoken by Jeremiab, who was catled to- the prophetic ofice while a youug man. He was persccuted in his native vil- Jage, and, forsaking journeyed to Jérusalem, but there the persecution did not cease, He finally went into exile 1 Egypt, where ho remuined steadfast in the wm until stoned 10 death by unbelievers. hen an old man he compared the trials of his youth with those of his latter days, and found that the earlier persecutions had pre- ared him for these latter, greater trials, and hen he cried nloud, “It is good for man to bear the yoke in his youth.” The yoke is a mark of servitude, a siga of bondage, and this Jeremiah- knew. It is easier to break the egg than crush the ser- pent, and he thought the class of 89 appre- ciates this fact, for in its motto it says “E'irst _conquor ourselves, that we may cor quer others.” Continuing the preacher said : “When you first entered school you learned submission, The restraint was gall- ing at first, but upon this hapoy day you are Elail you bore the yoke, otherwise you would ave turned aside for every fancy, every ca price. To become a master workman' you must first put on the yoke of apprenticeship, and let me say here that the necessity of be- coming an apprentice before ~becoming a mastor is not appreciated; if it were we would have fewer blunderers in trade, fewer quacks in medicine, fewer shysters n the Jand_and fewer novices in the ministry, “How many of the men of our nation whom we delight to honor bore their yoke bravely? The fairest pages of our ountry’s bistory were written by men who ad first made a history for themselves. Even Jesus was subjected to his parents. B'You bave finishcd the first stage of your training and and have trained yourselves to seif denial. John Wesley and a young man ere once walking through a room together n which were tables lavishly strewn with most tempting luxurics. ‘There is not much self-denial here,’ said the young man. ‘No,’ returned Wesley, ‘but there is every oppor- tunity to practice it Young ladies and young gentlemen, you will be going through Buch a room some day. The tempter will lead you into temptation, and then you will find a fleld for self-denial. However much your mouth waters for unhallowed fruit, you must taste not, but put upon yourselves the yoke of self-de “ihere is greater wotk for you to accom- lish than you have yet attempted, and hough your back aches you will make ‘more backbone by climbivg than by being carried up the steep upon another's back. " By bearing their yokes now, the preacher gald, they would be better fitted for the reater difficulties of the future, and then he old them bow ne: ary humility was to success. The wide-spreading branches of the elm were only possible by the growth of the humble roots in the earth. The indul- gences of younger days were the roots of a sour old age, and the flower of their youth they shouid forget not the latter days, In conclusion he said: “1 congratulate you upon the excellent op- portunities you have enjoyed. You had advantage of the best, much better than some of us older ones hud twenty-five years ago. lalso congratulate you that you are now prepured for something better than you have yet attaned. Whatover course you may pursue, you will find no_lack of oppor- tupity to be useful. I would remind you that ‘the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.! Your friends all wish you well, and long for your success, and while you may attain success in some earthiy calling, emeinber this, that the Master alone can elp you to the mastery. Ho says to you: YTake my yoke upon you.! Do not say that the burden is too grievous unto you. To put on the yoke of Christ is to obey his com- mands; to turn from the wrong and turn to the right. Follow his steps with humility, trusting yourselves to His guidance, and the time in which to begin s in tho days of your youth. Resolve now that when the end comes it will find you yoked to all that is od, and then will the wishes of your riends not have been wade in vain; then will you hear the Master say, ‘‘Well done, €00d and faithful servant.” The Children's tival, The children’s festival at the Southwest Lutheran church yesterday afternoon was an entertaining occasion for the large crowd assembled, and especially 8o for the children an whose behalf 1t was given. The exercises were entertaining as well as instructive, and the singing of the children was appreci- sated by all present. In the Sunday school clusses are twenty-eight boys and forty-five glrln, who have been gathered in by the in- uence of the teachers and some of the scholars, Gussie Carter and Edward De- bald were credited with having been instru- mental in bringing the largest number of children into the Sunday school classes, and to each was awarded a handsome bible for the good work performed. Little Leaven Leaventh the Whole Lump. A disease in one part of the body will eventually fill the whole body with disease. Every year or two some part of the system grows weak and begins to decay. Such part should be removed at once and new matter be allowed to take its place. There's no need of cutting it out with the surgeon’s scalpel. Purge the old diseased and worn-out parts with Branoxerw’'s Proes. Then the new body will take cure of itself, The Guards' Concert, The usual large crowd was at Hanscom park yesterday to listen to the excellent musioc of the Owaha Guards' baud’s sacred concert. Men, women and @children assem- bled at the park to enjoy an afternoon’s ree- reation on the wreen sward and the charwms of sweet music, aud the park seems to be roWing more popular as 4 summer resort ith each succeeding concert, Mortuary. The ailments which afilict the kidneys and bladder are so numerous, that merely to name them would fill a space far outrun- ning tho limits of this article. Suftice it to say, thut they are both obstinate and dan- gerous. To their prevention Hostetter's Stomnch Bitters is well adapted. The stimulus which 1t lends to the action of the kidneys when they are lethargic, serve to counteract a tendency in them to lapse, first intoa state of pernicious inactivity, and afterwards into one of positive organic dis- case, which soon destroys their delicate in- teguments, poisons the blood and causes death, A double purpose is served by this depurent. It promotes activity of the kid- neys, and expels impurities from the blood which have no natural channel of outlet, ex- cept these organs.
