Struck On the Track. The work of laying the extension of the electric motor track up South Madison street and Graham avenus to Fairmount park, which was commenced Wednesday morning, was interrupted yesterday atternoon by a strike among the workmen empioyed. The causo of the walkout, as stated by some of the strikers, is as follows: Tho men have been working for $1.25 a day, and expressed no dissatisfaction until the section gang, reg- ularly employed by the company to take care of the track between this city and Omaha, was put to work on the new line Thursday morning. These men received their regular pay, $1.40 a day, and the new men began to growl as soon as they found it out. At 1 0'clock yesterday they made a demand on Foreman Herman for the same pay as the regular section men were getting. His reply wus that they could work for what they were ting or quit and make room for others, who would. For a while there was consid able excitement around that part of the city, and two or three fights were reported, but an investigation failed to corroborate these storics of open outbreak. The foreman finally told the men that they could not work anyway, and that if it was found necessary to pay the additionul price the strikers would not be the men who would receive it Roadmaster Brinton declined to take any part in the difficulty, referring the matter to the superintendent. About 4 o'clock the strikers loft, evidently despairing of secur- ing tho desired concession. In the mean- time the section men h continued their work and finished track-laying up to the point. where the strikers had ‘stopped teaving up the pavement. The strike will not delay the work very iaterially, as the company can socure all men necessary to continue it. 'I'he work is not being rushed,as the switches and curves, which were ordered at Johustown beforo the disaster, have not yet arrived and it 18 understood that they are not made. "he rails ure here and it was deemed advisable to lay s wuch of the track as possible at once, 80 that there would be uothing to prevent putting down the curyes as soon as they ur- rive, and getting the line in_active operation as soon us possible. With the exception of (s the line is now completed junction of Madison strcet und Graham avenue. The poles are set as far us the cut at the entrance to the park and the cro! ires will be in position to-night. The other extension of the motor line to the upper end of Broadway is also to be com- pieted at once. The poles have been erected along that line to the end of the Broadway paving. It is stated that the company pro- poses to run h alternate tr mount park, snd the others to Upper Broi way. This will give the samescrvice throug the central portion of the city, usat present, and tho eastern terminal points very con- venient service af well, It is hinted that the park line will becontinued through the lower end of Main strect, returning up South Main and Pearl to the present line at Broadway and arl. story 18 not authoritative, so far as the present building of the line is concerned, but the line is already projected, and it will be built as soon_as the company can get to it. It has been the inteation of the company to change the Main street line to an electric roud, ever since the first line was equipped: a year ago. It is stated that it will be but a_short time until the Upper Broadway and Fairmount ex- tensiol mpleted, and horse cars on Broadw: becowe a thing of the past. With the continval branching of the electric inotor lines, all parts of the city will soon have a first M. You see, Mr. Ames and several others are quite extensively interested in the electric motor line now in operation, and they practically control the Union Pacific. This being the case, I hardly think they would throw the way open for a rival line. There is not the slightest doubt but that an- other line would pay very well indeed, and the route proposed would be a splendid one. Of course, the present line will always have the greater part of the passenger traflic, on account of its location. It is the most direct line that can be built from the center of Omaha to the center of Council Bluffs, and it i8 bound to get the cream of the business. Tho proposed line would get a very large patronage from the residents of the southern part of the city, as well as nearly all that of South Omaha, It would pay beyond any doubt, but the right of way over the bridge is by o means us sure,” The very sume argument is advanced by the pushers of the new line project to show that the right of way will be secured, They state that the new road would traverse o wholly different territory, and would leave the present line its nutural patronage. They urge that the Union Pacific directors will be willing to lease the present wagon road of the bridge to the motor company in order to derive some revenue from it, and that this income would more than balance the loss in patronnge. There are u few parties, who ought to know, who claun that none of these theories or arguments touch the actual facts in the case, If there is any bitch in the case, it is doubt- less the one resulting from the change in farcs that would result, The new company would cut the rate toa 5-cent basis for & single trip, and 80 compel. the present com- pany to do the same, thus making a very de- cided reduction in tho latter's receipts. This is undoubtedly where the trouble is, if the question of receipts is what is vo devide the matter, One thing that seems to indicate that the new line folks have Littie hope of getting over whe Union Pacific bridge is the fact that they aro now talking loudly in favor of a free bridge between the uwin cities. *‘A free bridge and no fence,” is now their ery, and the indications are that such will indeed be the case before the proposed new line and a b5-cent fare becomes an established faot be- tween Council Bluffs and Omaha, A Have your old furniture upholstered* good &s new. Mr. C. R. Allen, the well-known map maler of Council Bluffs, has just completed a set of road plans for Harrison county of the same kind as those made for Pottawatta- mie county several years ago, and which have proved so valuable, The system upon which Mr. Allen works is entirely original, and his road plans are copyrighted. TItisa most valuable one, as the county ofticers where it has been used can amply testify. Pottawattamie county, for instance, is the largest in the state, and hus a very extensive aund intricate road tem, but by the aid of Mr, Allen’s charts, the location of every road in the county can be seen at a ylance, where by any other system hours of time would be required to find cven @ prominent roud on the records. By his plans a complete record of the county roads is spread out vefore the eye, and every point where a road hus ever been located is shown. The trial that has been given the system in this county and the splendid satisfaction it gave, was the means of inducing the Harrison county supervisors to order the system, and when the import- ance of the plans is brought to the atten- tion of otner county boards, and the im- munity from expe e and vexatious road cases is guaranteed, it will be generally used. Mr. Allen has made maps or surveys of nearly all the counties in western Towa, he can get up a set of these new and valu- able plans very quickl, For the c ence and use of supervisors alone, th would be saved in a few years, —~——— Held the Proceds. Harry A. McAllister is the cognomen of a rather rapid young man who mixed circus lemonade and dispensed the same, together with dyspeptic-looking sandwiches, to the gallant fire fighters of Iowa who assembled in this city during the tournament. He was not the proprietor of the little booth which he occupied, but was workiog on con inis- sion. At the closo of the week he was the possessor of nearly $100 in good, hard cash, the total receipts of his sales. Instead of making due returns thereof, he proceeded on a sight-seeing trip, and had great pleas- ure in again distributing the cash into the chaunels of trade. When he finaily showed up in his accustomed haunts, an officer ap- peared and took him into custody. After a short experience in the city sweat-box, he announced his willingness to make good’ the amount cisimed, and after paying $4.60 costs, assessed by Judge Aylesworth, he was released to round-up another batch of experience at reduced rates. e S J.
