Rice, a rising young business man of Boston, was married w him about 1850, and by their union was born Allen Thorndike. A sister of M. Rice married Patrick Grant, a prominent cit= izen of Boston, and their son was Robert. Grant, the well known author of *‘Con= fession of a Frivolous Girl” and other modern novels. One day while Allen was at school at Nahant, a Boston su= burb, pending the court’s decision upon his possession by the parents, sitting sidd by side with his cousin, Robert Grant, a burly Nackman, black as the aco of spades, appeared at the school house and asked to sce the boy, as he had a message to deliver to him. No sooner had the youth stepped over the threshold, however, than he was bundled into the hack &md immediately whirled away toward Boston. The abduction was soon discovered and then an instant pursuit, but in vain, for the hackman, under orders from the mothcr, guve loose rein to his horses and arrived in the city a good lengue ahead of his pursuers. His horses dropped dead that night from over exertion. el For a day there was an entire absence of clew. Then a thread was found. The hackman, it seems, was in reality a white man blackened with burnt cork and afterward, in washing himself, he cavelessly left o smooch ov two behind the cars. By this he wus found out, was arrested, fined and smprisoned. Following up the clew thus gained, the boy and his mother were traced 1o a country town in north= ern Vermont, and at last the ver, house was located. The officers searches the building from roof to_ cellur, but could not find the Iad. Yet he was there all this time, carefully concealed in an underground passnge. At night Mrs. Rice and tho boy slipped away to Canada. The next heard of they wera in Island Pond. Driven to bay again, they went to Portland, and there, em= barking at once on u_cousting vessel, sailed for Richmond, Va., from which city they took a vessel to England. - A greater part of the time Allon was com= pelled to wear girl’s clothes us & means of disguise. It was 1n this curious way that Allen Thorud, Rice came to visit Europe in his earliest years, and this adven= ture resulted “in his staying abroad until, when he had attained his majors ity, he decided %o return to his native land. His mother, meanwhile, had given him a splendid education in I'rench, German and at Oxford, Eng- land, where he had graduated witl honors in 1873. The adventure in the abduction incident cost his people $30.- 000 for expenses, ns no money was spared to clude the pursuers, - To a White Kose. By M. Randall Brown, the mind read performed an odd trick last evening during his performance at the Bijou thoatre, says a Now York despatch - to the Chicago Tribune. A copper wire was stretched from the stage of tho Bijou to the Western Union telegraph office at Thirtieth and Broadway, and over this wire, several blocks long, Brown was apparently able to read tho mind of Prof. Cromwell, the well-known lecturer. The profe escorted_by. the treasurer of the theatre, procecded to the telegraph office and placed one end of the wive to his forehead, Brown, blindfolded, put the other end to his hrow on the stage, and after a few mo= ments of hesitation he wrote the figures 7427 on a blackboard in fronv of him, When this was done a message wis sent to the professor that the experiment was completed, anda fow minutes af- terward he returned to the theatre and stated that the number he hiad thought of was the ono put down by Brown. il LAl .
