Under cir- cumstances loss sensational than those which have madoe Father Damien’s name ring through christendom, Father Douglas Hope has practiced, in the un- romantic monotony of the Harrow rond, a self-surrender as complete as that of tho hero of the Leper island, Close to that landmark of the 'bus man, ‘“The Prince of Wales,” stands a home for boys, and in connection with it a bakery and printing works. The place was founded by Rev., Lord Archibald Douglas, o brother of the marquis of Queensbury and of Lady Florence Dixie. He brought his fortune and tho fervor of his new-found faith to his task. Iven the Harrow road is not without its romance. Lord Archibald’s sistor, Lady Gertrude Douglas, joined her brothor, and identified herself with his renunciation of society, perhaps too completely; for during his absence in Canada, whither he had taken some of his waifs, she married the head baker and became Lady Gertrude Stock, Some five years ago Lord Archibald found his increasing cares too heavy for him. He -retived to quict mission life in Scotland, and his )(hxwo in the Har- row vond was taken by his cousin, Father Douglas Hope, A groat-grand- son, on his father’s side, of Lord Hope- toun, and on his mother’s side of the duke of Buccleuch, he called **cousins’ with all the blue blood of Scotland, His father, Mr. Hope, of Luffness, was at one time member for Windsor, and his mother, a daughter of Lord Montagu, was an eurly bedchamber woman to the queen. But Father Hope had obliter- ated the traditions of {x(s family, and tho memories of Kton and Christ church, when he went to St. Vincent’s home to be priest, teacher, father and nurse to seventy boys, mostly rescued from the London streets. He shared their rough food, and lived their life in school-room and playground, If he ever thought of himself he might have known that, in spite of+his six feet of stature and his brilliant physique, he was not seasoned for the rough life he had adopted. His entire devotion 1solated him from his fellows in the outer world; but those who got glimpses of him were not astonished to hear that rheumatic fever had carried him away last Thursday afternoon. He was laid to vest yester- day in the cemetory at Keusal Green, not far from the scene of his five yoars’ labor of love. —_——— That Tired Fecing Afllicts nearly every one in the spring. Tho systoem having become accustomed to the bracing aiv of winter, is wenk- ened by the warm days of the changing season, and readily yields to attacks of disease. Hood’s Sarsapurilla is just the medicine needed. It tones and builds up every part of the body, and also ex- pels all impurities from the blood. Try it this season. e A Oat Adopts SBome Squirrels. Some time ago Russell Rice cut down a poplar troe on his farm. The tree was hollow, and inside it he found a nest of five young squirrels, says a Jef- fersonville, Ind., dispatch o the New York Sun. He took them home aund conciuded to raise them. Mr. Russell possesses 4 cat of unusual intelligence, and this cat manifested a great interest in the young squirrels. Oune of them was given to pussy, and she watched over it with such care and tenderness that all of thom were placed under her protection. She nursed them until they attained cousiderable size, and a day or two ago tho young squirrels were turned loose in the Scottsburg park, where they now are. The cat immedi- ately removed her residence likewise to the park, and she and the young squirrels may be seen sporting there to- gether any day, R AR CERAEY Every woman in Omaha—we say women because men are usually too busy to look after such small matters— should insist on the head of the house procuring some reliable medicine for use in case of a sudden attack of colic or cholera morbus in the night during the summer, It is not pleasant to hunt up a physician after midnight, nor to go down town and route out a druggist at that hour. Talke our advice and procure a 25 or H0-cent bottle of Chamberlain’s Colic, Cholera and Diarrhcea Remedy. It can always be depended upon and is not unpleasant to take. e Tobias 8, Western 5.
