THE OMAHA DAILY BENK: THURSDAY. JUNE 6. 1889, THE SPECULATIVE MARKETS. An Upward Turn Favors the Bull | Tide of the Deal. EXPORT TRADE REPORTED LARGE Nothing Much Doing in Corn and Prices Varying Little—A Dullness in Oats — Provisions Rule Firmer—Cattle Fair CHICAGO PRODUCE MARKETS, Special 'Telogram to ‘Wheat did bettor, te-day, for a of reasons. The local features were bullish. A fair degree of activity prevails in the cash market, and Milwaukee reports the working of 75,000 bushels for direct export. Clearances from all the lake ports indicate genuine business, and New York advices re- flect considrrable activity in the export trade at theseaboard. From the southwest there are, however, advices of a continuation of generally favorable harvest conditions, though a few showers in southeastern Kansas are reported. One of the private wire houses have a cable to the effect that it was raining copiously in Russia. This piece of news was received when July was 70} The market broke to b%c on it but it declined to stay, and was not long working above 76c again. July wheat opened at iblge, advanced to 761{c, worked }¢c back, #0i¢e, regained lost ground and went to 761ge, very little being done at the outside, how- over, The price started back rather sharply soveral times, and the market acted as though it wanted to settle at iic, but the buying fever was on, and rallies were as sharp and frequent as the feverish down turns. The operations in the pit were on a large scale, and for once the shorts and the eleventn- hour bull scalpers were notthe only buyers. There was good buying by commission mer- chants, and the generailty of local opera- tors, and the market had a stronger and firmer undertone than it has shown in many weeks, And firmness is not confined to cago. It ruled to a marked degree in every market in the country with the possible ex- ception of Minneapolis, St. Louis is at last on an eyer keel with Chicago and Toledo. New York and many other points usually led Chicago in the up-turn. There were no notable individual transactions in _the mar- ket, but a generally increasing interest in the market is being manifested. June wheat Bad quite a little boom here to-day. It opened at 76, ndvnnLed 10 T73c, reacted to 77e, and closed at 77lgc. at {4l @ilgc, and Closed at " C ber was acti It opened at 76c, sold up to 7ilgc, and closed at 6. The closing range indicates a gain of 13¢cin June as compared with yesterday: 1'4¢ in July, c in September, and le in December, It was altogether a tame and featurcless corn market, and closed up in the nerveless manner which was its main characteristic The price changes were trifling, as far as thero were any, in fayor of bulls, July, August ana September over yesterday's closing small receipt of corn, com- outpouring of a week awo, was the principal cause of the firmer feel- ing. 'The export clearances, also, from the Atlantic were encouraging in their magm- tude, while the withdrawals from store were also heavy. The strength in wheat helped to stiffen the views of holders and work upon the fears of the shorts, but there was no activity in business. There was a good deal of changing of deals between July and September, the local speculators look- ing for these months to sell at the same price before long. Oats were duller than for several days previously and the speculative prices were confined within a g, range, ruling prac- tically steady to firm. ' There \was moderate changing of this month to July and Septem- ber at differences of e to e, and o respectively, while new business was light. The posted receipts were less than expeeted, by 45 cars, but the weather was favorable for the new crop, and the reserve stocks of old are still liberal. June sold at 21%@22c, touching 21%{c, with next month at ::.*um 223¢c, and September around 22 10 go to store, sold at 21%; @2174c. In provisions there was a }ittle more stir and interest. There was no greut ch the general situation, but the bu; short ribs and lard by brokers, smd to operatine for a couple of large 'hous ated considerable uneasiness, Wright, was_claimed, covered over 500,000 1bs of short ribs, and this action induced other orts to follow suit in the same articles. Some short lurd was also bought in, but in pork there was no trading possessing sig- niticance. In point of actual activity, pork, in fuct, was the slowest line from the start. The underlying feeling was somewhat ner- vous, though the fluctuations in prices, all around, were confined to quite a narrow range. The day's prices, however, were higher than yesterday's, For pork and short ribs the closings showed an actual ad- vance of 12}c to ldc, and for lard of 2!¢c to e, The CHICAGO LIVE STOOR MARKET. CnicaGo, June 5.—[Special Telegram to Tue Bee.]—Carri, lo-day’s receipts con- sisted of about 7,000 natives and 8,000 Tex- aus, The native steer market opened strong, snd 5@10¢ higher; and all cattle selling above §4.00 maintained this advance, but ordinary grades, or such that came in con- tact with Texas, dropped as soon as it became known that the run of range stock would prove larger than at first estimuted, and while prices for no class of native dressed beef and shipping stecrs developed any material weakness, sales were not as satis- factory as the carly ones. Good native cows and heifers sold again strong, but thin native canning grades moved very unsatisfactor; ot the recent tow figures. The Texas market ruled 10¢ lower on canning grades, but steady for better qualities, such as are taken by the dried beef trade. Both the supply and demand of stockers and feeders was light, and the volume of business transacted was nominal.
