Clear the Way Without loss of time when the intestina canal is blocked up by reason of coustipa tion, chronic or temporury. It should be borne in mind that this ailment is prone to become lasting and obstinate, and breed other worse complaints. Hostetter's Stomach Bitters is the precise remedy to remove the obstruction effectually, but without drench- ing or weakening the blockaded bowels, & conséquence always to be apprehended from the use of violent iaxatives, which are among the wost pernicious of the cheap nostrums swallowed by the credulous and misin- formed. The fiat of experience, and of the medical fraternity, sanction the claims of this standing aperient. Not onlv as a source of relief and permunent regularity to the bowels, liver and stomach, but as a means of remedying and preventing kidney and bladder troubies, and- fever and ague, 1t is without a peer. e The Burgiar Abroad. The following burglaries were reported at police headauarters: Six dollars’ worth of carpenter’s tools were stolen from Henry Green, 2420 Patrick avenue. Thieves broke into John Dahlstrom’s room at 708 South Twenty-seventh street, but suc- ceeded in securing only a razor and a gold collar button. . R. A. Morms' room at the Metropolitan 1l was visited by sneak thieves and an oat taken. Justice Kroeger’s room at 415 North Nine- teenth s#'eev was broken into during his ab- sence in the evening and two suits of clothes stolen, one of them being brand new. The Judgoe offers a reward of 25 for the arrest of the thief. 1t is a Curions Fact That the body is now more susceptible to benefit from medicine than at and other season. Hence the importance of taking Hood’s Sarsapavilla now, when it will do you the most good. TRANS-CONTL AL ' MATTERS The New Route Thought to Involve the Manitoba. Concerning the press dispatches sent out from Spokane Falls, relative to a deal be- twoen the Omaha road and the Oregon Rail- way & Navigation, thereby opening a new trans-continental route, the ofcials here state that the report is cither unfounded or has beon misconstrued. It bas long beon llg){}vlod that the Oregon & Pacific and sey- other minor sections of detached road in hat vicinity were backed by the Chicago & Northwestorn. But between these and the main line or any part of the Northwestern mpravar. there is a wide gap, and viow of which the officials here are of the opinion thav the Omaha road is not con- nected with the deal. The only way the Omaha road cculd reach this would be in a deal with the Union Pucitic at Sioux City, or by a longer route, at Omaha, Nothing is known at Union Pacific headquarters con- corning any such transactions, It is thought that the St. Paul, Minnecapolis & Manitobn is the road that' may be leaning in that direction. It connects with the Union Pacitic at Helena, and it is thought may bave consummated s deal whereby the Union Paciflc gives trackage rights to the Manitoba 10 the cost via Pocatello. ‘This would be a circuitous route, but as a strong rivalry ex- ists between the Manitoba and the Northern Puoiflo, it is thought that the former has tied up with the Union Pacific in this way. Bullding New Road. The Union Pacific has completed a survey for a road from Tintic, Utah, to Eurcka, Ne- wada. The enginecring department has sub- mitted a profile of tne line together with the estimated cost for constructing the same. The aim of the company is to reach the ore mines in Nevada. It isalso stated that this will eventually be extended to Los Angeles, and that is the proposed route of the Union Pacitic to the coast, thereby tapping the priocipal shipping port of southern California and outting into the territory of the South- eru Pacitic, . Mail on No. 5. Supermtendent Thompson, of the B & M. road, bas notified the trainmen on No. b passenger that, hereafter, mail pouches will be received by them from Deerfield, Chalco, Gretna, Greenwood and Waverly, to be delivered at Ashland for No. 1 east-bound for Omaha. Jndge Dundy held a short session of the United States court and appointed a receiver to settle the Red Cloud Milling company trouble, By agreement of all parties, Fair- banks & Co., who seized some of the prop- erty and were arrested for contempt, ac- copted an order 4o return what they took Wi H. . Scott of Red Cloud was ap- d the receiver. Arguments were to have been made in the Wilson-Richards land case and Judge Dundy said he would continue court, until noon, but James . White an Alabama lawyer, representing the plain- iff, expréssed a desire to take part in decora- tion exercises, and through deference to his patriotic wish. the court was adjourned until to-day. The McGillons, Ben O'Neil and others, held in contempt for interfering with the reservoir of the Harlam Cattle company, will be put_on trial to-day. Itis qaietly hinted thatj two or three attorneys will be asked to show cause why they should not be punished for advising the defendants to defy and disobey the orders of the court. Strictly Busines: What is the Swift Specific Company! Who compose the organization! Is it a clap trap patent medicine bumbug, gotten up to de- coive and make money out of the people? These questions we thiftk are answered by the officials and citizens of our city and state. ATLANTA, Ga., Nov. 10, 1888, ‘We know the gentlemen composing the Swift Specific Company. Gravy, Editor Atlanta Constit ution Defense ot the Rules. Osmana, Neb, May 80.—To the Master Plumbers—Gentlemen: After keeving pace with you along through this little fizht, which you have, I am certain, undertaken in a somewhat dreaming condition of mind, please just let me awaken you up before your dream is over, or, perhaps, when you do awake you may find yourselves .in quite a different climate, and I think the climate is hot enough where you are yvithout trying to find any hotter. Now, gentlemen, since I may suppose you awakened out of your dream, will you please lot me give my opin- ion upon the resolutions expressed by Mr. Hussey, your representative, at a meeting held at the Paxton hotol on Tuesday after- noon? First of all 1 not your business is ham- pered and interfered with on account of the rules formuls by the plumbers’ union. Now I consider th rules the very hand- railing to h guides you to your several landings, These rules, I presume, are a limitation holding good a standard of wages of 50 cents per hour to every journey- man plumber, also regulating the hours of 1abor, also that none except union men be employed, and also a regulation of appren- tices. Now, I hold that all of these rules are very necessary and are reasonable in their nature. Take the standurd of wages, consider it, don't you think that that is a good thing¢ Supposing you did not know of any stan- dard of wages what would each of you rule by when _figuring your work, some men are pleased wi‘h a small income, some 1ith a reasonable in- come, and some can never be pleased, and the consequence wovld be 1o grind down the poor workingmar, It is a grand system to have a figure upon which to work; for in- | stance, taking a mechanical view of the mat- ter, if one had no center from which to draw a‘circle, and a straight line from which to find a square, what would be the result, you would have no confidence in your perform- ance, and so it would be with you if you haa no standard of wages- you would have no confidence in yourselves, Now, don't you think a limit of working hours isa good thing and advantageous to yourselves, Some amongs*, you would rather Work men twelve hours a day and pay them for nine before you would want work, and by having no standard of wages and no_certain number of hours you are holding in view, how.could you accomphish that? Noxt is that none but union men can be employed. Is that not as beneficial to you as to the jour- neymen? Why, a non-union man can work for what he hus a mind to, and if you were allowed to employ whom you desired there would be no need of a standard of wages nor a union. Take, as an illustration, the car- peuters; they have u standard of wages, but it is buried by the allowance of masters to employ whom they choose, Then comes the limited number of apprentices; I say that is right and just. Why, after a boy is two years at the trade he can ao general work as well as any man, so the consequence would be a shop filled’ with apprentices and very few men. Now, gentlemen, in concluding my opin- jon, I say your suggestions are absurd and ridiculous in the extreme. I think that some among you ought to be very quiet. Why, if any one asked u to execute a piece of plumbing work, it would sound through you Jike a galvanic battery, as you never learned the trade and one can not misjudge you when he thinks that the leading parties among you are most ignorant afier such propositions made by you on Tuesday last. And here I warn the journeymen plumbers to hold fast to what is good, as whenever they give up to these rules suggested to them on Tuesday they place themscives be- fore you a target to be shot at. But I hope that the jour- neymen plumbers will be backed by all Avho want to see the work of the season go on, and I should more especially like to see a sottlement for this cause, since there are other trades affected, and families will hunger in consequence.
