THE OMAHA DAILY BEE: FRIDAY. MAY 10, 18S9, THE SPECULATIVE MARKETS. Bnormous Increase in Exports Re- ported From New York, RAINY WEATHER DISREGARDED. But Yesterday's Markets Weakened Nearly All Around—Cattle * and Hogs Not Very Brisk. CRICAGO PRODUCE MARKETS, [Special ‘Pelegram to —The continuation of rains in the northwest, and the extension of the rain area o the south and east, proved to be a factor of insufficient importance to cause a break in wheat, to-day. Towards noon, however, there ‘was a fairly libera! swing in the pit on the prospects of general showers throughout Illi- nois and Indiana, the territory that has been prolific of complants of drought of late. New York fired in whole broadsides of ex- port news. If oue-half that is told about the export business is true, stocks in New York will be reduced very largely in the near future, because the wheat reported “worked for export” during the past week or ten days has not been all shipped, and a #00d many people on 'change are disposed to regard the reports as “faked.” A good parv of the news comes from sources that are usually regarded as trustworthy, and, in the absence of direct proof to the contrary, it must be accepted as reliable. The fact that gram has not yet cleared can not be considered evidence that business is not genuine, although 1t can not be said that it does not go out because of the scarcity of vessel room or unfavorable freigh es. The clearances, yesterday, as posted on the blackboard, foot up only 53,000 bushels, but a dispatch from New York mentions an actual clearing of thirteen boat loads (104,000 bushels) additional to the lute reports yesterday, to be included in the day's ofticial returns. Reports of new business done in New York, to-day, vary from sixteen to thirty-five boat loads. Dutch gets a bill in particular of freight room being taken for forty-six loads of grain, twelve to Portugal, eleven to Avonmouth, twelve to Cork, seven to Marsailles and four to Glasgow. This may not mean wheat, aud the buying of freight room does not necessarily mean shipment of grain at all. Stili, the indica- tions may be considercd tavorable to an out ward movement. McDonald wires that the best posted men in the trade believe that all of the wheat in store in New York and vicin- ity has been placed, except 3,000,000 bushels, As stocks there approximate 5,000,000 bushels, this means that 2,000,000 bushels are held in readiness for shipment, it conditions are favorable. The story of the local market may be best told as follows: July, popular delivery, opened anywhere from S0cto 80'5¢, and advanced immediately to c. Above B0l{c thore was very free selling by Linn, Cidahy und other profcssionals, who had one “long for a turn,” and equaliy liberal uying by George Smith, Pardridge and Phillips, who had_presumably gone short at lower figures. What Hutchinson was doing was cloudy, but ho was suspected of heavy purchases in a quict way. Neéw York was certainly a good buyer ob all the soft spots. After the heavy-weight professionals had ot protty well evened up, the market sold off on skepticism oa the subject of export business; and on expectations of rains through the winter wieat districts, the mar- ket was run down to . v subsequently advanced to S03¢, nd off to 80c, closing, however. or 3¢c above yesterday's last price. Vicwed as'10 _wheat, the mariet may be said to bave displayed considerable Sgimp” It was buy on all the breaks, according to the scalpers' rec- ord, which applies only to one ses- sion, without regard = to _to-morrow’s prospects. Muv rauged at S5@-G¥c and closed at 8 June ranged at 83 @S4kge and closed it Sio. The firm opening to the wheat market, strong cables and the nervousness of the shorts, caused corn to start in fairly active and firm, at about the closing prices of the previous day. On free buying by the shorts some advance on the opening was estab- lished, but the offerings of July corn at 36c and over werc in excess of the demand and an cusier feoling and a lower range of prices was_established. St. Louis became very weak on the prospects for rain in the corn belt, und New York was similarly affected. The export demand was reported active at New York and shippers were also taking hold freely here. From the seaboard, clear- ings were very heavy. There wera 60,000 busheis shipved yesterday from New Orleans to Liverpool. The reaction from the early strength was not again made good, the clos- ing figures being nearly the lowest of the day and from }4c to e under the prices cur- rent at the corresponding tine yesterday. Outs were active, with the rece saw motion carrying prices downwar It was conceded that the shar) yesterday wus not altogether wi With reports of ruin in the west and indica- tions of further moisture] there was a desire to sell. Furthermore, the local scalpers wero disposed to take in the profits resulting from the recent advance. The opening was a fraction lower all around, with May selling down 3¢ to 23i¢e, and June to 23c. July 1naintained its premium of nearlylje over the next month, and September was quict with light trading in No. 2 outs, to go to store, at 2810, Burely 25 per cent of 124 cars inspected is graded contract oats, and the withdrawls from store were reduced to 6,425 bushels. In provisions the fecling was a little nervous, The opening and closing were bharacterized by decided strengtn, but dur- ing the day the market exhibited more or less uncertainty, with trading largely of the scalping sort and between profossionals. The gossip lately circulated concerning the movements of Cudahy and Armour naturall, pluced the trade somewhat “at sea.” In ail quarters a strong disposition was manifested to keep close to shore until something de- finite was developed, hence the day’s market was largely & pitdeal. Quotations were kept within a moderate range, and for pork and lard the final quotations were the sume as yesterday. In short ribs, the changes gotually —mude were limited to su advance of 3ic. ——— CHICAGO LIVE BTOOR MARKET.
