County Clerk Roche is showing by facts and figures in his office that the attack made upon him last Saturday by Commissioner Anderson was not only uncalled for but cal- culated to injure his chances for re-election. The alleged exposure of crookedness came out through what was supposed to be s dis- co7ery of excessive or double pay for two records made by Gibson, Miller & Rich- ardson, and the warrant called for pay for both. That discrepancy was fully ex- plained and satisfactorily disposed of by Mr. Gibson in his letter published Sunday morning. The mistake made there does not rost with neither can it be charged to Mr. Roche. Wnen warrants are handed in, he simply records and turns them over to the clerk of the board, whose duty it is to check up and compare thom witn the appro- priation sheet. Thercfore, the latter is the man who should have detected the mistake, This, however, is not the only nor reai charge against 'Mr. Rehe's ofticial acts which prompted Anderson to inaugurate a fight on him, Ono of the city papers printed statements, prosumubly a8 coming from An- dorson, that the county clerk has been n the habit of entering fees in his cash books, without indieating the fact in_a column for that purpose, and as the law res 'es, “from whom received.” But this charge i unfounded. ‘very item is put down with the of the person for what purpose the payment is \d the time of day at which the transaction occurs, The only voint raised, or that is now under controve that has al the coun v, has reference to o s been practiced, not on t but by tho register of deeds ystem notaries_ public, which, in ail twenty-five cents “one certificate.” It is claimed now, that the name of the person should be tuken and put down instead of the word “certificate,” County Audjtor Evans has checked up Roche's quarterly report, and says he finds it correct to a cent, but intimates that there are certain thin surprise soinebo It was subsequently learned that the com- missioners will, when the time comes, bo able to prove by at least two parties th et to come out that will Roche charged them $1.25, instead of cents, for certificates. Mr. Koche denics that he has collected more from any one than the law allows. After disposing of Roghie the commissioners will go for Jeff Megeath, who, it 15 said, 18 aiso following this old precedent, Mr. Roche, it is claimed, has certainly kept the neatest, most systematic and con- plete set of books that his ever been kept in the county clerk’s ofico. Roche's” receipts from this source the last quarter amounted to a total of Anderson is now trying to make it appear that the county has been swindled out of two such books as the one mentioned above. He has discovered that Slowman purchased the other, and had some of the board at Slowman’s office about mnoon showing it to them. Edwards paid § for No. 8, but, ac- cording to Mr. Auderson’s statement Slow- man’s, which was turned over, already written up cost him #60. Roche admits the sale to Slowman, but the latter paid only $40, and except the cost of the blank book $12, the extra went to clerks who wrote it up for him. Both books, however, have been re- placed, and were paid for with the proceeds derived from the others. ‘‘And I am the man,” exclaimed Anderson, ‘‘that the news- papers have been pounding.” The ac- fo) Hurrah Kor Manawa!
