He Visits Omaha and Talks on Several Intercsting Subjects. Bx-Governor Robert B. Pattison, of Ponn- «vlvania, was in the city yesterday but left for Chicago ni the afternoon. It will be remem. bered that Mr. Pattison sojourned in Omaha about three wecks nearly two years ago, when, a8 a member of the Pacifio railroad investigating committee, he went so much deeper into Union Pacific matters than the officials cared to have him go, that some of them made strong though ineffectual protests. In conversation with n Bre reporter, Mr. Pattison said that he had learned enough to convince him that Omaha will soon be the groatest stock market and meat packing center in this country. Speaking of his experience as an_investiga- tor in railrond affairs, hesaid: *“The only trouble with the Union, Central and North- ern Pacific corporations lies in the fact that they are trying to compete with newer roads, which lost less than one-half what' they did to build, bonded indebtedness s so y fluctuating re cements, it is impossible for them to pay runnin, enses and the inter- est on their bonds. As compared Wwith the original cost and amount of mortgaged obligations, the new roads can haul freight and pussenger business for on third less than the old ones and make money whereas the others lose.” He thinks that the Union Pacific people are foolish to ask for an extension of tiue on their government debt. H Referring to the fight for prohibition in Penusylvania, both the Bradley expressed themselve confident that the proposed ai be defeated. “The committec charge of the contest on behalf of the prohi- bitionists, contend,” said Mr. Pattison, “that they will be able to se- cure an almost solid vote in the country, but I don’t imagine they will be able to overcome the large cities.
