The principal companies are the Adams, United States, B. & O., National, American, Southern, Wells-Fargo, and Pa cifie. Under this agreement tho rates from New York to Chicago ave 32 per 100 pounds, and from Chicago to Omaha §2 for the same weight. Tne thr rate between New York and Omaha is $&. These rates are a reduction of 50 cents between this city and New Yorlk, and the same between this city and l,lm.u;o S LK Mortuary, The funeral of Waldo E. Potter, aged 19 months, son of Chiaries S. Potter, ugent of the Wells-Fargo and American oxpress com- panies, took place yosterday. The remains were interred in Forcst Lawn cemetery, Mrs, O'Hearno died at the family residence on the corner of Twentieth and Clark Thursday night of cancer of the stom- ach. The funeral will occur at 830 o'clock to- morrow morniug from the Church of the Holy family. The remains will bo interred in St. Mary's cemotery. Mrs, O'Hearno was very well known in Omaha, having resided Bere twenty-two years. Tho husband of the deccased has beon connected with the car dopartment of the Union Pacitic. T i A New Train, The connecting link between Ne- braska and Kansas has just been placed in service by the Union Pacific ruilway. This train leaves Council Blufls dajly at 4:45 . m.; leaves Omaha at 5:05 a. m., and runs through without change to Manhattan, Kan,, making direct con- nections there with the Kansas division of the Union Pacific railway for all oins in Kansas and Colorado west- und, and for Topeka, Lawrence, Kan- us(uy and points east and south via Kansas City. Returning, train leaves Manhattan at 2:25 p, m.; arviving at Uuntrho at 6:25 p. m,, Lincoln at %:50 P 1., and Omaha at 11:20 p, m., Coun- cil Bluffs 11:40 p. m., making: direct conneotion with Ksusas division trains from Kansas City, Lawrence, Topeka and the cast, and from Denver, Salina, Abeline and all points west, enabling rnuengon to visit the |)|ll|L{|ln| points Kansas and Nebraska in the shortest possible time. The Motor company had four squads of laborers, numbering seventy men, at work upon their lines yestorday. Under the supervision of the city englneer the company is establishing its lines on Fif- | teonth street, between Jackson and Jones, makinga cut of seventeen feet in ordor to do so. It is oxtending its line south on Fif- toenth from Howard across to Jackson and also working upon its Fourteenth stroet crossing of the cable line. Crossings of the belt line on Twenty-second near Nicholas are also boing put in to-day, and_switches at Twenty-fifth and Charles and Twenty-tifth and Grant. Morse & Co., the leading wholesale boot and shoe dealers, have decided to establish in Omaha an extensive boot and shoe manu- factory. Arrangements are so far com- ploted that active operations will be com- menced within a few Material has been contracted for, workmen arc being employed, and all matters counceted witit the _entérprise are being pushed as rapidly as possible. A Liguor Firm to Be Held Re- sponsible for Consequent Damages? One of the most peculiar eases of litigation that has ever boen contested in this country, a case that involves several fine points of law as well as the possible establishment of a precedent, is on trial before Judge Groff and a jury. It grows out of the murder, committed about twelve months ago, in Montgomery & Adams’ saloon, when Wil liam Ferguson, a colored boy, shot and killed Ole Oleson. Mrs. Caroline_ Michaelson, the m other of Oleson, sues the firm for #5,000, claiming that. througn the selling of liquor by them to Ferguson, they are responsible for her son’s death and the loss to hor of his support. She alleges that, just prior to his death, ho had promised to provide for ana take care of her so long as she lived.
