The thirty-two young ladies who are to make the Merchants’ carnival so attractive are devoting themselves assiduously to drills and are becoming very proficient. Tuesday night 1s the time sot for the car- nival, and Exposition hall is where it will be held.' Everything possible 18 being doue to make the affair unique and interesting, The young ladies are preparing most claborate costumes, and when arrayed ib them next Tuesday night will present a very pleasing picture, — An Unfortunate Renort. The report in an evening paper to the ef- fect that the passengers at the Burlington fdepot were being preyed upon by wayward women, owing to the ignorance of the officer of that establishment, is unfounded. Oficer Kirk, whose duty it s to look after all irregu- larities of this kind, through effective ser- vice has kent matters of this character sub- aued, and has spared no pains in freeing the depot of this class of people. It is well known that the Burlington depot is provided with good police servi and it is a bad place for toughs and loafers. The Stomach Distils Acids. “These, if existent in a natural quz unvitiated by bile, play their functions of digestion and assimilation, But the artificial acid resulting from the inability of the stomach to convert food received by it into sustenance, is the producer of flatulence and heartburn, which are the most harrassing symptoms of 'dyspepsia. The best carmina- tive is Hostetter’s Stomach Bitters, Far more effpctive is it than carbonate of soda, magnesia, or othor alkaline salts. Those in- riably weaken the stomach without pro- lZuLlng permanent benefit. No man or woman chronically dyspeptic, and consequently ner- vous, can be in possession of the full ineas- ure of vigor allowed by nature. Therefors, invigorate and regulate the system, und by fore they all have an cqual right to the use of the, earth upon which their existence and development depends. As the most practicable method of assert ing the equal right of all man to the use of the earth, we advocdte the avolition of all taxes upon industry and the products of in- dustry and tho taking for public purposes by taxation upon land values, irrespective o improvements, of the annual rental value of all those various forms of natural opvortun- ities embraced under the genoral term land, We hold that to tax labor or its products is to discourage industry, We hold that to tax land values to their fall amount will render it impossible for any man_to exact from others a price for tho privilege of using those hounties of nature in which all living men have an equal right of use; that it will compel every individual controlling natural opporfunities to either utilize them by the employment of labor, or abandon thom to others; that it will thus provide opportunities of work for all men, and secure to each the full rowwrd of his labor; and that as a result involuntary pov- erty will be abolished, and the greed, intem- perance and vice that spring from poverty, and the dread of poverty will be swept away The following officers were clected: Peroy Pepoon, president; C. Annin, private secretary to Senator Paddook, returned home yesterday from Washington. He says that the weathor down there is lovely, that the locusts are blooming and everybody is leaving town, ex- cept the politicians, “Don’t know as I can tell you anything that is not already known. So far as the ral appointments in Ne braska are concerned, I can only say that the delegation has made & few recommendations, but the president manifests no disposition to be_in & hurry about appointing them. The delegation is working very hard to secure oneof the assistant_attorney generalships for John C. Watson, of Nebraska City, and I believe they ill succeed. John Peterson has been agreed upon for internal revenue collector. Brad Slaughter, as you know, has been con- firmed ns_marshal and Patrick Egan goes to Chili, but_beyond these I don't believe anything definite has been done. The se- lection of a United States attornoy seems to be receiving rather indifferent consideration and it would not surprise me if Mr. Pritchett should be permitted to serve out his term, The legal department has not as yet outlined a policy, though the indications are that we will have uch_stricter adherance to rules than ever vil before, Ve appointments have been made as compared with the first month's work of former administrations. The various departments appear to be determined that no man shall be removed before the ex- piration of his term except for zood reasons, A sweep has been made inthe railway mail service but that was demanded by the whole country irrespective of party.” Mr Annin says that he gave no particular attention to the Omaha postofice flght and had very little to say about it. Omaha was invaded last evening by Bill e, J. Whitcomb Riley and Eli Perkins, three of the mos notoriously funny men in prose, poctry and stupendous prevarication this or any other country ever producod. Nye and Riley came together, while Perkins floated in by limself. Nyeand Riley hotelied at the Millard while Perkins hid himsclf near the sky-light parlor of the Paxton. The first two came to cure Omaha’s billious pop- ulation with a double-headed huvnmuus en- tertainment styled lecture, but K is not mude known, Mr. Nyo s had been under the woather for several duys, and because of the quictness encoun- tered at Des Moines last Wednesday can- celled four engagements, went to bed there and rested until noon yesterday. “But I am all right now,” he continued, ard will do my best to drive dull caro away from Omaha be- fore leaving.” That hae oug hean be so quickly cured by Shiloh’s Cure.
