FINKELSTEIN - Brooks' Mistress Still Here, The following appeared yesterday morning in the Council Blufts departmeut of the Omaha Herald: A morning paper yesterday afirmed its alleged interview with the mistress of Thomas Brooks, the murdercr of De Good. 1t also takes occasion to condemn the police for alleged luck of duty. The police, from Chief Lucas down, ure indignant, and in con- sideration of their inability to locate the ince th> night of the murder, and : excellent detective achievement, Chief Lucas has 1 the Herald to offer Tur Bee ard of §100 1f 1 the Mel- by wagon. woman the night of mc ‘murdor, Ao i she has no in the city. aution to g the woman, and had turned tiie police would have most certainiy known it. ‘This is “‘dead easy’ and Chief Lucas could not possibly put his ¥100 wnere he would lose it more quickly t han in this very way. The only trouble is that the cash was not put up, and the Herald's *‘authorized offer’ 18 not worth the puper on which it was printed. The chief has already squealed, and says that he did not know that he had made a such offer. The Herald says tha make the offer, and this dispute will havo to be settled. The alleged indignation of the police *from Chief Lucas down’ is all A myth, as the majority of the patrolmen are personally aware of the truth of what ap- peared in Tue Bee, and have seen the woman several times in this ¢ nce Tues- day evening, when it is stated by the Herald that she crossed the Broadway bridge. The facts are not as stated by the Herald, but as previously stated by Tue Bre. The Melville woman has been in this city every day since the murder, and Tie BEE can pro- duce at an hour’s notice a dozen witnesses who will swear to the truth of this stat ment. It can also be shown that 1o inquiry or search forthe woman was made at the place where she made her home in this city by any policeman for over thirty-six hours after the murder. This tallk about the great precautions taken by the chief to vrevent the return of the woman is all buncombe. She was taken to the station about 1 o'clock yes- terday morming. County Attorney Organ stated that he did not care to have her held as a witness in the Brooks case, and she was rdingly charged with vagrancy. She w leased by Judge Aylesworth, and called at the city clerk’s ofiice in the 'afterncon and paid her monthly fine us u prostitute. She said that she had not been out of the city a whole day since the murder, and announced her inten- tion of staying he: e SN K Blank books made o orde nish patent binding for the same. 1,E2vsrett bloclk, Can fur- ties wishing Call and see samples at room Pearl street. ““There ought to be a change in our judicr ary " remarked & prominent at- torney yesterd “The terms of court are altogether too long dnd that is why our court business f < before anothe are so tired out that th ambition to push their ¢ them when they are are s should be a re tween terms and the terms shol shorter than they are at present.
