Yesterday was Shrove Tuesda, The day was one of «general rejorcing in catholic countries. It was the carnival of Italians, the Mardi Gras of the French, and vancake Tuesday in “Ye merrie England of ye olden tyre.” The day is more generally observed among the old French families of New Orleans than anywhere else in this country. There, tho day is given over to fantastic parades and at night, balls, the magnificenca of whica are proverbial hiere were no public observances of the in Omalb FASTING. of Lent Be- Ash Wednesday and in all Catholic and Episcopal churches solemn ices will be held. It 15 the first day of _ent, and derives its name from the old-time custom of wearing sackcloth and ashes into the sanctuaries and synagogues as emblems of penitence. During the next forty days devout Episco- palians and Catholics will forego many of the pleasures of the world and devote themselves 10 meditation, prayer, attendance upon reli- gious services in_their respective churohes, and not a few will spend the scason in ab: stinence from many of the luxuries of the table in which they are wont ta indulge. In the churches referred to there will be nightly religious services held at intervals in each weel. The sale of Chamberlain’s Cough Remedy is becoming immense. A JOB FOR s');ll-;ll(lll\'. Mr. James Says That is the Design of a Teachers' School. Mr. James, the superintendent of schools, does not favor the move of the board of edu- cation, proposed at Tuesday night's meeting, of establishing a teachers’ training school in connection with the High school. He con- siders it a needless and extra expense to the city of at least $2,000 a year. The results, lie thinks, uld hardly be termed benefic He holds it better for Omaha to let the state educate the teachers as it is now doing. There is o normal school at_Peruprovided vege specially for the training of teachers. Ho says, further, that there are two theor prevalent among the people concerning the conducting of schools that diametrically opposite. _ One is that the public = schools are for the best in- terests of the pup that the money con- tributed for the purposes of education should bo applied with discretion, The other theory of many people is that the schools are run for charitable yirposes, so that certain poor or unfortunate c can have a job. This latter theo ¥ is ridiculous, but the actions and reasoning of many persons show that the absurd notion actually exists. The ‘saperintendent expressed the that it is this second charitable theory influences some of the supporters of proposed innovation, and that the greatest argument in its support will be that it will give somebody a job.
