The arrest of the forger Nelson, by Dotec- tives Ormsby and Dempsey, is decidedly more important than at first supposed. Yes- terday he was oound over to the district court in the sum of $1,000, and should that be furnished he will be arrested on a score or more charges of a similar nature. He has been working the states of Iowa, Kansas and Nebraska for all they were worth, and his victims are numbered up among the hun- dreds. His plan was to stop at a leading hotel in the city he was about ta_vork, and pay the charges day by day in advance. He would then purchase small bills of goods, direct them to the hotel, and offer a check in ayment. He woutd always call after bank- iz hours, but as the goods were always ac- epted at the hotel, no immediate suspicion s aroused. Occasionally e would' play merchant to cash a small check for Pebruar he was in Lawrence, Kan,, and pos ntractor, and worked off ten bogus ks, one of the victims being J. N. McFarland and the other William Bromeland. In Topeka, Kan., he is wanted on from twenty-tive to thirty specific charges, and oth too numerous to mention. While there he registered as C. C. Nelson. He was also heard from in Nebraska City and Lincoln, in the latter place alone coming out $100 ahead, B A New Train. The conuecting link between Ne- braska and Kansas has just been placed in service by the Union Pacific railway. This train leaves Council Bluffs daily at 4:45 a. m.; leaves Omaha at 5:05 a. m., and runs through without change to attan, Kan., making direct con- ons there with the Kansas division of the Union Pacific railway for all Lmiul.s in Kansas and Colorado west- ound, and for Topeka, Lawrence, Kan- and points east and south via Kansas City. Returning, train leaves Manhattan” at 2:25 p. m.; arriving at Beatrice at 5 p. m., Lincoln at 7:50 p. w., and Omaha at 11:20 p. m., Coun- cil Bluffs 11:40 p. m., making dirvect connection with Kunsas division trains from Kansas City, Lawrence, Topoka and the east, and from Denver, Salina, Abeline and all points west, enabling passengers to visit the principal points in Kansas and Nebraska in the shortest possible time. These trains have first- class equipment, consisting of smoking ars and first-class day coaches of the latest pattern. The new train will fill a long felt want, and is bound to be popular. e A Clever Capture. Detectives Ormsby and Dempsy made a clever arrest Tuesday night, and for a time Omaha merchants may rest easier. 1t was that of John Nelson, who has been working the town with bogus checks for the last two months, but has Litherto eluded capture, Ho is some hundreds of doliars shead, and vlayed the old-time game of purchasing a small bill of goods and then paying for it in a forged chock and pocketing any change that _might be coming, Among his victims are Max Mever, Frederick, Falconer, and Norris & Wileox, although none of them lost large amounts. 'rhe officers finaily located him in the house of one Wilcox at the corner of Twenty-eighth und Cuming streets, and last night paid him & profes: sional _visit, ~ While one of _ them guarded the front door the other looked after the back entrance, but Nelson, becomin alarmed, made a break for the side door, and went over an eight-foot embankment. A lively chase ensued, but he was finally cap- tured, and admitted his guilt, at the same time offering to settic anything that was against him, He admitted that the boots he wore came from Norris & Wilcox's, and said he had been in Nebraskg City. As the police have been the look-out for h for some time the arrest is an important one. At o later hour, the records of o crime were looked up, and traces of the prisoner's handiwork discovered. He was charged with committing them and final broke down and confessed. His work ox- tends over the entire country, Some of his more recent exploits were renc Atehison, Topeka and Lincoln, one banker of the former town having detected 140 of them. Professor Dahlbom and Charles Robson, the two parties referred to in Tur J3kx Tues- day as having churge of the entertainment given for the benefit of Immanucl hospital n Exposition hall on February 22 and 23, said that the arrangement they had with Rev. Mr. Fogelstrom was of a business char- acter and that the use of the names of R Mr. Harsha and Rev. Mr. Fogelstrom was authorized by the latter as far as his name wus concerned and by parties claiming to come from the former gentleman, who was out of the city. All day Tuesday Rev. Mr. Fogelstrom was besieged by persons with whom Dahl- bom had incurred bills and had them charged to him. The reverend gentieman laid the case before Chief Seavey and the result was that Dablbom was arrested by Captain Green at 11:40 2. m. and will be prosccuted on the charge of obtaining goods under false pre tenses, He is at present behind the bars, awaiting trial. “Che pr isa person of striking and venerable appearance, his gray locks are carefully curled and his clean- shaven face reminds one of the late Henry Ward Beecher.
