A building belonging to the Packard heirs at 1314 north Sixteenth street has been deemed unsafe and the inmates ordered to vacate. The house was built on filled in ground ana the dirt under the boards on which the brick foundations are built got washed out by water from a bursted pipo. Thus caused the building to settle and crack on one side, The recent dissstrous gale caused the building to crack in other places and the superintendent of buildings belicves that it is unsafe to live in, A private meeting has been held in the oftice of the superintendent of buildings con- cerning the yof the Hellman block on Abe corner of Thirteenth and Farnam, but Mr. Whitlock refuses yet to divulge the re- sults, e A Legal Po Stephen 8. Felker has entered suit in Jus- ce Kroeger's court against Constable Charles W, King to recover fifty cases of braudy, a safe and other articles seized by that oicial on an attachment. Felker claims that tho way the goods were seized is illegal. The original case came up in Justice Reed's Gourt, andon the day set for the hearing Folker, who was then defendaut, appeared, but the justico did not. Later, Iteed sent word to Felker to sappear at another time, but he refused to do so, and the goods were turned over into the hands of the constable ou the date chosen the second time, As Reed falled to show up the first time, Felker claimed the suit was subsequently out of Lis jurisdiction and the present suit is on the #rength of that belief, THE OMAHA DAILY BEE: ¥FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 15. 188 Clerks of the Register's Office are the Donors, Register of Deeds Megeath and his wife celebrated their crystal weading yesterday onteen clerks of tha office said Mr. Me an elegant compliment, by presenting to iim and his wife a magnificent silver fruit stand, upon which was a la stal bowl, There was a set of silyer fr ives, which companied the stand the em ployes of the register's oMee intended to visit Mr. Megeath's nce, corner of Park and Ed Creighton avenues, and surprise the couple on their fifteenth anniversary, but after th osent was purchased Deputy English le vas ill, ynd th was postponed until Sat night, by which time it 18 expected that she will be ablo to receive them. No earthly power, of course, can restore n lung that is entirely wasted, but Dr, Pj s golden medical discovery will rapidly and surely arrest tlie ravages of consumption, if taken in time. Do not, therefore, despair, until you have tried this wonderful remedy. —- The Newspaper Vandal. There are many degrees of meanness. Men may be mean in great things, and in lesser things, But a little bit of meanness is more contemptible than a great, overshad- owing aggregation of cussedness, The Stealing of a newspaper off the door-steps of a subscriber has been often characterized as an act worthy of the meanest mau on carth, So it is. Complaints are numerous among sub. scribers of Tue Beg that the paver is stolen from the front yard or porch by sowe soul- less culprit, who perhaps knows nothing of the dead certainty of retributive Justice. The man was supposed to be in a demented con dition, and yesterday the board of insanity ade an examination of the case. About a I witnesses, includidg Julius Me; John BBaumer, and other jewelers for whom Minckler had worked, were summoned and testified to his insanity.
