OS— PECULIAR BROTHERLY LOVE A Man Who Sent His Kin to the Gallows. DOES NOT REGRET IT MUCH. He Neglected the Chance to Call on the Rest of the Family While In This City, The Barrett Case. Henry Barrett, alias “Reddy" Barrett, the fndividual who participated in the murder of astreet-car driver named Tollefson at Min- neapolis about one year ago, and uvon whose evidence two of his brothers are sentenced to death, and are now awaiting the final call in the Hennepin county jail at Minaeapolis, arrived in Council Bluffs Sunday en route to St. Louis. When questioned concerning the matter, he said: I have told my story, aud it is on the court records in Minneapolis, I am sorry to may that it is true, Sorry, yes, for more reasons than onie. 1 had hopes that, at the worst, Pete [one of the condemned men| would get off with a light seatence. As for Tim [the other conderaned brother|, T did not care so much. OF course, T would much rather have gained the freedom of both, but, as a matier of preference, 1 was unxious for the crime to rost on Pete as light possible, 1 tell you now, as I repeated nnder oath, that Tim was the one that fired the fatal shot. He did not pull bis gun until the car driv sisted. We had no_ thoughts of doing thing until Tim spoke of holding np the first man we met. Ina fow moments we came across the car driver as e was turning his car on Lake strect, We told him to throw up his hands, but he_drew o gun instead. “Tin fired a stiot, and Pete and I ran iuto the cemetery that was near by, Auother shot was fired, and i a short time Tim joined us with the driver's cash box. We hid the box and divided the money. Tim was the man that shot Tolletson. He is my® brother, but if I do say so, he is atough charactes 1 have been under surveillanee in Minncapolis for a long time, and now that the supreme court has refused to grant the boys anew trial, I was given liberty to 0 where I desired. L am gomg to St. Louis where my wife is at present. She s ill and requires my attention. As to what I will do in the future I can not say, but I intend 1o locate in some place where the awful erime will not stare me in_the face. We did not. intend to murderanybody that night, and Tim is to blame for the whole matter. When Tleft Minncavolis, I was assured that the authorities would do ail within their power for Pete. He may have his sentence com- mutted to imprisonment for life, but as for Tim [ am afraid that he will hang, Know- ing that ‘wurder will out’ I turned state evidence to protect myself and Pete,” v Barret has a sister_ eesiding in Council Bluffs and a mother and two broth- crs Frank and Ed. residing m Omaha. He Qi¢ not visit any of them, but on the contrary cvided them 'as it s stated that Frank’ Barrett is so incensed over him turning states evideneo that he has openly asserted that he would shoot him - on sight! The Omaha faction of the family re- side on Twenticth and Pacific streets and are_constantly under police sury ce. Ed Barrett has within the past three months rested several times for larceny, and ated that there is scarcely a court docket in Omaha that does not contain the name of some member of the family who have been taken into custody for some un- lawful depradation. Tim ana Pete Barrett who are now under sentence of death at Minneapolis, bear i questionable reputation in Omaba and while here were regarded us dangerous charaters by the authoritics. INDUSTRIES ARE COMING. Omaha's Prospects and Needs Con- sidered by Cit “In my opinion,” remarked W, E. Gratton, “ithe prospeets are bright for a good year's business. There are several reasons why this is so. Eastern capital is again looking this way for investment; money was never known to be so plenty in the New York banks as at the present time. This must have an outlet, Capital cannot brook idle ness and will cventually turn to the west to be employed. When the boom broke in the carly spring of '87, castern cupitalists were frightened by the cry raised that Omaha had reached its highest voint; investors held aloof ‘waiting to see what the outcome would be, but after watching Omaha for two years and sceing her steady progress right i the face of depress ting over the whole coun- try, they have concluded that Omaha is a go0d place to invest. This feeling has been gradually spreading throughout the east, till now the resalt is that eastern money is again flowing this way. This new blood in the shape of ncw woney will soon make itself felt, by infusing business with new life, and will give those too heavi loaded o chance to unload. This will create a botter fecling, restore con- fidence, and make business Omaha has reachied the pomt that now, without any special effort on her part. En- terprises of different kinds are seeling here; manufactorics, wholesale houscs, agencics, and even railroads, are all alive to the fact that it is to their interests to get here, and that they must get here soon or some one else will occupy the tevrite I can remeu- ber, few years back, that when a factory employing ten or fifteen hands decided to 10- cate here there was a big hurrah made in the papers; we felt like getting out a brass band; everybody was tickled, and wonderful things were predicted on all hands; but now if a factory employing one hundred hands or more locates in our city we take it as a mat- ter of course. Why, it was only the other day that the Murphy furniture company bought a site and stated that they intended employing about 500 hands. The papers made mention of the matter and that was all, Of course we are all glad to have them here, but we don't take it so much as 8 compliment as formerly, for we kuow they are bound to come. These new enterprises put frosh mouey into cireu- lation; some of the new employers or em- ployes invest in real estate, homes, branch business or speculation, and this in itself has a tendency to brighten the market and make an easier feeling, When real estate was booming o great many porsons bought heavily, more than ther means justified, and tho result was when the lull came that always follows a storm thoy were uuable to sell and found nothing but future pay- ments staring them relentlessly in the face, A majority of these persons have fortu- Dately beeft atle to trade their property off, mostly into the hands of outside parties who have been able to meet all payments as they became due, and thereby unwittingly help- ing the market by sending new finances through the veins of commerce, Speaking of trading reminds me that that branch of the busiuess is in better shape than ever, A year ago trades were often made af ter the manner of the two men who vraded a currency dollar for a silver dollar, and paid an agent 25 cents for making the deal. Swapping property for property was the rule a year ago, but in all my trades recently cash has passed from one side to the other, One of the strongest reasons why I think the coming year will show an improvement in real ostate matters is that the tide in this direction has already set in. The past three mouths show a material gain over the corre- sponding period of a year ago. Do Ilook for another boom! " No, nor do we want one, While admitting that money can be made easier and faster during one of these animated spusms, the reaction is sure 1o comeand then there is aanger of losing all by not being able to meet payments. Tam glad to seo the real estate business beginning to be run on @& Inpmnu\u basis, That ‘“‘curbstone brokerage,” formerly so much in vogue, is now & thing of the past. Agents whose reliability can be depended upon are now sought after instead of the scalper. Auother splendid indication is that through all our quiet times values huve held up, and I could mention numerous instances ro there has been a gradual increase dur- ing the past year, Yes, I look from now on for a general increase in values, especially within the three mile circle. —— Pears’ is the purestand best soap ever made. ens, about adozen individuals and the porters were The 10ss on in supplying the wants of their was ushered e of the Barlington, and hav probable snccess of covered by insurance, building is vory smail, The building is in charge of D, .
