There seemed to be some doubts among railroad oftic sterday about the so-called “Gentlemen’ Agree nt” being exactly what it has been represented to be, and the matter is eliciting considerable discussion. It is learned that very few of the presidents have signed it except conditionally, Adams, of the Union ¢ Pacific, is probably the only ofticial who stands tooth and toe nail for the scheme. That, doubtless, is due to the fact that he s virtually the father of the plan and is most sincere 1n his advocacy of its adoption. While a goodly number sig- nified their intention of signing, they seem to manifest an indifference that indicates suspicion and coldness. Up to date the lllinois Central has stood out as being heartily opposed to the agree- ment, consequently neither the Burlington nor Alton consent to surrender and come into camp. An officiak of the Milwaukee said yesterday that under existing cir- cumstancos he considered the issuc as knocked out and thinks nothing more will be heard of it after this weck. Two or three goneral managers and us many passenger men were seen, but they refused to express their opinious.” It was noticed, however, that each man, when the question wes put at him, met it with a peculiarly significant smile, as much as to say, chestnuts. The New Time Table. Two division superintendents and half a dozen helpers sailed into the new time table work at Union Pacific headquarters yesterday in order to get the document out before next Sunday, when it goes into effect, At that time the Union Pacific and Northwestern deal, by which the latter will run through trains between Chicago and Denver, also becomes an established fact, 1t is reported that_these trains are to be the equal in point of luxury and to any ever sent out here. There seems to be an_exist- ing_ impression, too, that this combination which is madc_in opposition to and affects the Burlington, has much to do with killing the “gentlemen’s agreement.” The point is plain cnough and needs no discussion, Ticket Commissions. The Omaha general agents of eastern lines received a circular yesterday from Com- i A of the Western States Passenger association, giving them the new schedule of commissions allowed on ticket sales, Between Omahu and St. Paul, Chicago, Peoria, Bloomington and St. Louis the commission is fixed at £1; to interme- diate points, 8 pro-rated per ccnt of that sum, Rheumatism Is undoubtedly caused by lactid acid in the blood. An Evening With the Irvish. An eveniog of unusual interest was that afforded by the last programme at Park Place. The subject under discuselon was one of great and absorbisg importance, viz. “The Irish Question,” mot however, in its popular sense, but viewed, from a purely lit erary and historic standpoit. The seven essays were panoramic sketches from the Druidical period of the #irst five centuries down to eatholic emancipation and the land fon of our own times. The introduc tion dealt mainly with the difficulty of treat- ing a listory beset with sach distracting problems, bristling with such thorny contro. ag versies, ‘1t was a long, dark road with m blind alleys, many sudden turnings, n unaccountable crooked portions, disclosing tho strangost and most peeplexing chapter of human history and homam desting. The other essays treated of the invasion of the Northmen, the passionat ghirst of the Irish fol dge, Strongbow's invasion of § and the English domin dating therefrom.
